I think that the problem that a lot of people run into when writing their business plan is that a lot of marketers have successfully sold people on the fact that they can just plug a bunch of info into a program and then have it spit out a beautiful and complete business plan.

These forums are full of TRAINED ENTREPRENEURS who know better than to even imagine that this would be the case...but I know that there are a lot of entrepreneur-curious folks out there who are wondering whether or not to take the Business Plan Software plunge.

I agree that these applcations can be extremely helpful...but they don't help the entrepreneur to FEEL THE PAIN and deal with the REALITIES of the business model. I went through an eight week seminar at our local business incubator and we'd write one section per week.

At times this process seemed VERY TENUOUS and to be totally honest it wasn't any fun half the time. But by taking my time, and being more careful and hands-on with the writing process, the business plan MEANT more to me than the original one that I had created USING that software.

Taking my time with my business plan is what made it a success! But believe me....I was workin' my tail off doing lots and lots of design as I was workin' my tail off on the business plan!

    respect

I believe for startup we need to be dynamic and react to changes fast, instead of sticking to one business plan.

Government census provide detailed economic information but it is slightly outdated. This is a start, it is especially useful if you are going to deal with other companies and small businesses. Writing a business plan is the equivalent of hell for an entrepreneur who specializes in use his creativity. It can be done but it takes several tries to get it right.

Business plans are a waste of time until you actually get some traction like users or actual sales. I have wasted time on my business plans only to find out that nobody actually reads them!

Market research is worthless as well. No one will believe any market research you have carried out yourself and it's very expensive to outsource. Instead just Google competitors and read annual reports of similar companies, that should give you a good understanding of the market.

I would say do an “action plan” to get traction first, this should be the maximum of one page. Once your business gets traction, then put together your plan for funding. Remember, a 5 year old should be able to understand your plan because VCs have the intelligence of 5 year olds (Sorry VCs).

Your plan should be a deck of slides that is full of graphs and pictures and not a document full of text and technical language. Your market research should contain the traction you already have and your sales assumptions should be based on this traction.

In summary, the best business plans are understood in 2 minutes and contain details of a company that already has a prototype or beta that has traction.

A business plan is just that, a plan.

Success only comes with hard work, learning from errors, creative marketing and effective salesmanship.

Got to disagree there (unless you plan on selling sweets at school). There is no real business (not a strong one anyway) without a business plan. Even if it's incredibly basic (or filled with wikipedia and google quotes) it is still a vital - if not the most vital - component of any successful business.

How do you figure a Word document full of quotes is the most vital component of a business? A business with good marketing and salesmanship will do fine without a business plan. Not the other way around.

I agree, writing a business plan is an essential step to your businesses success whether or not anybody but you reads the business plan or not.

In order to be successful you have to go in the trenches and do the work before starting a business, you cannot just wing it and hope for the best. This is one of the reasons there are so many failed businesses today. You need to put in the effort, do the research, write the plan and take action. Your business plan may change as you develop your business but the foundation will remain the same and is an essential step ion creating a successful business.

Without this step you are setting up your business to fail.

    Just my 2 cents. :-)

I found the following online (Howtobooks) which you guys might find interesting. If you're still adamant a business plan is BS, let's see who succeeds long term shall we?

With business failing at an alarming rate the need has never been greater to start off on the right foot with a clear understanding of exactly what you hope to achieve and how you will do it. A well thought out and carefully structured business plan is the key to the long-term success of any business. Whether you are just starting a business, buying one already established or perhaps in need of extra finance for expansion you will need a business plan.........

Your reason for compiling a plan will be different for each situation:
    • If you are starting a new business you will require a plan to clearly assess every aspect of the business and show how it will succeed.
    • If you are buying an already established business you will need to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the business to decide if you will be able to make it a success.
    • If you are already up and running and in need of extra finance you will need a plan to convince those putting capital into your business that you can and will succeed.
    • If you are applying for one of the many grants available
