    Talking Starting a sports bar

    Hey,

Just want to bounce some ideas of some people out there. I am thinking of starting a sports bar featuring some kind food to be cooked over open flames, kind of like a Brazalian BBQ. I live in a town of roughly 90,000 with a University population of 12,000 on top of that. There are currently no clubs, watering holes, bars, except for a small one on campus that is only open late one night of the week. My idea is to open a sports bar with may big screen TV's that I plan on getting paid for by a local electronics store or at least at cost in which I will in turn advertise this company directly on the TV. My target market is the University students which are greatly under served. By giving some kind of discount, maybe 10% off drinks, and heavy advertising on campus I think I can't loose. If you factor in the other 90,000 people in the city that is just a bonus. There will be advertising to the rest of the city but will remain mostly word of mouth as word travels fast in a town of 105,000 including student population with only 2 or 3 good bars in town. This bar would also include nightlife but more of a relaxed feel with lots of seating and a dance floor. Any thoughts out there or ideas?

Its hard to say. No one here knows your target market and more important your geography. If you revealed your market it might make it easier. Regardless, you need to do the due diligence to determine the feasibilty of the bar and the potential for its profitability. Also, are you aware of local laws and regulations regarding bars and liquor licensing; there may be a reason no other bars exist, either due to strict ordinances or the costs associated with obtaining a license.

a college town with a bar open only one night a week, unless this is bob jones and university there is something odd. I would assume what jasaunders has said about licensing and laws is somehow in effect because because bars+college kids = gold mine.

You know what might work... a Dave and Busters. Its a family envirment, yet plenty of fun for college kids. They have pool tables , video games, pizza, wings and other food. They also have beer, i dont see why this would be a problem.

Dave and Busters usually Band in quite a bit of money.

Sounds like it could be a promising idea, but I'm curious why other bars/pubs haven't appeared in this area prior. A college population of 12,000 alone could reasonably support more than 3 local bars, not to mention the potential for local patrons on top of that. Definitely do your research, and let us know how it turned out!
