I have tried SCORE and the people there really weren't trying to help me out. The advisor i had really wasn't interseted in me or my business, so i went to the SBA they are more into the customer than SCORE is. But that is my experience.

Definitely. Also -- Colleges and Universities have been excellent resources for myself, including writing my business plan.

Score

SCORE is a great resource for individuals who are thinking about starting a business and don't quite have the finances to get alternative business planning help.

The downside of using score is that most of the counselors don't have that much practical experience building a business in the internet/information age.

They are a free resource, and it doesn't hurt to bounce your ideas off of them.

This sums up my experience working with SCORE. The downside of them being less internet/information age based is true, but there are some people in the organization that do understand the internet and other forms of information age business. They just might not work in the chapter near you.

They are a great resource for Business Plans especially. They will help you organize your ideas and organize those ideas into a written plan of action. They can also help lead you towards investors or even industry support. It's all dependent on your business and who your advisers are in the chapter near you.

I know some of the guys at the local chapter, mainly retired biotech guys, some not even really that ancient.

Although trends, channels, media, etc may change the basics, i.e. the fundamentals of business, tend to stand the test of time. I wouldnt be quick to discount their advice. Also, some of you saying they arent entrepreneurs and discounting thier advice based on that need to re-examine your thinking.

Some of these guys ran multi million dollar divisions with hundreds of employees. Would you rather get advice from them or someone who started a website in thier basement with zero employees calling themselves an entrepreneur?

It's not always going to be the case, but if you find that your advisor is not really interested in what you have to say, or your idea, then perhaps thats the reaction you'll get from others.
