Part-time business opportunity
Hello all,
I am new to YE and just joined recently and now have so many questions in mind that I need clarified. First a few things about me:
25 years old working full time at an Investment Bank. (9am-6pm). Does not earn a lot but enough for me to support my family. Yes, I pay all bills.
Since this was one of my obstacles I can say that I have been living frugally. However, I'd like to earn more on the side during my off hours as that has always been a hobby of mine. I have done a lot of ebay selling items but mostly things that I can get my hands on. It's a quick profit but not enough to live on. What I am trying to get at is:
1. How do I get products that I want to sell at a cheap price? (wholesale)
2. Do I need a special license to sell things? I don't always sell things, it's been on and off lately so a license would not be worth it?
3. I like to focus on products that are hot on the market so my market niche may be broad (mainly cell phones, toys, games such as Nintendo Wii, etc.). Do I need to contact the parent company?
4. I've searched constantly online for wholesalers but it seems that many of them are risky and do not sell what I am looking for. What can I do?
I can initially put in about $5000 into the first investment so this may be frowned upon by a lot of suppliers (if I can find any). What are my best steps? I'm sorry if a lot of these things are redundant. I guess my thoughts are just going crazy on me. Thanks.
-Steven

I'm starting up a business kinda related to yours. I'm doing Online Outdoor/Recreational Retail. Starting on eBay while I build/brand my site. Business License is cheap. I'm going to use a Fictitious business name, that also is cheap. Resellers permit is free, although they may require a deposit. My suggestion is to visit Score.Org, and find a person to help mentor you. I am doing that myself. They are a group of business people who volunteer time to help people run/start businesses. You can search each person's individual bio to fit your own.
If you want to sell a product, for example an iPhone: Contact Apple. Ask them who their distributor(s) is, and their phone number. Call the distributor and ask them what is required to open an account with them. Boom! It is the safe way to get in contact with a wholesale distributor, and not get scammed by people you find online, and it is very easy. You will run into some issues, like for example NorthFace will not sell their products unless you are brick and mortar, but you will find the companies who will work with you and your budget, so keep looking for them!

you won't be able to get a deal with any respectable company in the US with only $5k to invest. you will be able to import stuff from China as a $5k order over there is very well acceptable. the problem in dealing with China is you need to learn import laws and you need to make sure who you are dealing with is trustworthy.
