opening a workout gym

hi all,

I have an idea in my area to open a workout gym, my concerns/ideas

1. 1st floor (the lots we are leasing or renting)
2. just a heavy weights/cardio (no training)
3. location is in a small shopping mall
4. population of the area is always growing
a. might have to upgrade if the place gets to crowded
5. should I survey the area? create a website to gather information

I think that is it for now, if there are other concerns with this please let me know and what other technicalities should I look into? what aspect of this type of business is required?

It would probably be good to get some market survey information on peoples workout habits around the area.

look at the population in a 5 mile radius and the number of gyms (SF wise i thnk)..there is an industry rule of thumb for that ratio (I forgot what it was but ran into when I was thinking about this idea)

how big of a space are you looking at?

will you have classes or just cardio+weights? not having classes may reduce the appeal of your gym

5 mile radius good idea, I was doing a 10-15 mile radius - but that makes sense, I already started up a small survey on the baiscs, such as time, how often, travel, etc

kbud - it will be just cardio and heavy weights - all the personal training will come in time if needed

Do you have your own building? Or is it in an actual mall?

I myself lift weights, but I wouldn't go to a mall to lift.

You could also maybe buy a few tanning beds, so memberships include tanning as well. I know a local fitness place in my city that offers this.

You might want to contact some wholesalers and sell supplements and beverages as well.

My local gym has tanning beds (about 2) and sells drinks and supplements.

You could consider opening a Gold's Gym (franchising). It doesn't too much and you have everything setup for you. I know it's not very 'entrepreneur' like.
