I know profits are large, but start up costs are also huge as inventory is a huge cost.

^^ im sure when this guy opens a liquor store he will be buying his stock from the actuall wholesaler, not some kid in the UK. As he would be a registered retailer,he could get actual wholesale shipments, not shipments that have been through 5 middleman first

Why not just pick up the phonebook and ring the alcohol company and ask who is the distributor in your region?

No need to act all covert.

to get a better idea of expenses, I would talk to brokers about existing liquor stores for sale..you may even find an existing one that you like..anyway dont mention that you are thinkin bout starting one scratch..just use it as a way to do you research..just remember that brokers will most likely ask you to sign a non-disclosure statement so keep that in mind when talkin about what u learned or putting together a business plan.

wine sales are the most profitable segment, beer the least profitable..not sure about nyc..but in my area, the average profitability (net) is about 20% - 25%..maybe 30% if you have more wine sales..but then again, NYC has alot higher rent but also more volume

also, i know alot of ppl who own/have owned liquor stores..and its a HUGE time commitment..dont expect to have employees running it all day..you NEED to be there in this type of business (or run an EXTREMELY tight operation) or else you will get ripped off by your employees

what areas of NYC are you looking to open one? have you found a retail liquor license?
