Legal resources for a record label startup

Back in 1997, I started a netlabel called SCP. We had some very talented artists, and had a big group of followers. We released about 60 tracks in total, most of them just individual online releases (under a Creative Commons license, meaning the artist is the sole copyright holder). Some tracks were released on CD compilations by other labels.

We're currently planning on getting the netlabel active again, putting our old releases up for download and releasing some new material.

After reading a few articles on the internet about starting a record label, I realised I already had a good basis, I just needed to make it official. So in stead of just having a netlabel, my plan is to turn it into a record label as well, offering paid downloads (with extra's added), and eventually, start producing vinyl and CD releases.

I know the drill of starting a business, I am just wondering about the legal issues regarding earnings, how to share them between label and artist, copyright, contracts, etc.

Does anyone know more about this? Any online resources I could look into?

Have you checked out recordlabelstartup.com? I think they sell software which calculates royalties. I don't know if this would help.

Also, because it is legal issues you want to get it right, you might just want to go the simple route by contacting Business Link who should be able to put you in touch with a business specialist or somewhere you can get legal advice, because they are connected to the Government. Regards.
