How to research market/demand for a software idea

I have an idea for a piece of software to build on my own. I am curious how to go about researching how much demand there might be for it. I am just an individual without a bunch of money backing me up, so I'm not looking for big expensive processes -- I'm just looking to get a general idea.
By Googling I see there's not a lot of competition, so that's a start. What else can I do?

Google is a great start believe it or not. I think google is everyones friend. If it's not on google then it doesn't exist. If they do exist, they aren't marketing themselves correctly. You can see how many people are looking for your product or service by checking out the google keyword tool.
