Free Japanese manga for life
I just launched my new site and was looking for some feedback and marketing ideas. Obviously the site needs help visually but right now the bank account doesn't have enough dough in there to dole out money for a designer. Hopefully soon! Anyway, just looking for some feedback. I'd intended to advertise on anime forums but most of the ones I've looked at don't have banner ads. Since the site is viral I just need a beginning boost. Any ideas?
Thanks,
-Chris

Can you tell me how it works, as I am confused abit, do I get free manga like.. only when someone else joins or what? What do you mean by randomly, i mean, what if there is 1000 users, and i joined for 1 year but still got nothing?

It's is a 1:1 - referral:manga ratio so for every direct referral you definitely receive manga. Random referrals are just that...random so there is no way to guarantee you will receive anything. This is in the situation where a new member joins from the main page without using a referral URL. We ALWAYS give someone the credit when a new member joins. Obviously when the site is new like now the odds of random referrals are much more in your favor than when thousands of members are on board. As for joining for a year and getting nothing I couldn't say. The site is designed to be viral so it's my hope that members will actively promote their unique referral URL instead of just sitting and waiting in hopes of random referrals. But let's face it, membership is just $4 for the lifetime of the site. I don't think you are going to lose any sleep over that small of an investment. Considering most manga costs from $3-$15 just getting one breaks about even for you. If you are good at promoting your URL you could be getting free manga all of the time.
Anyway, it's all for fun. The membership fee is intentionally set low so it doesn't hurt your wallet no matter what your outcome is. It's always fun getting mail especially when it's manga and not bills! And we're also working on a community site to go with it as well as referral contests where you can win other anime/manga related prize packs. For $4 it's hard to go wrong.

Thanks for the positive words! I opened it up for international members yesterday...hoping it'll go well. I think next week I'll try to get someone more graphically inclined to help with the look & feel of the site.

Absolutely! lol
You're right. I should probably let everyone sign up for free and ship manga out until I'm homeless or just charge a nice shipping and handling charge like everyone else with "free offers" OR I could make them sign up for magazine subscriptions, credit card offers, and the like.
Sorry but I thought a one time $4 membership fee was the best solution. I don't feel it's sneaky...the manga & shipping is free. The membership is not.

I would suggest you allow yoru members to choose what they can receive, everything is already so random, and adding to that, receiving a random manga would just make matters worse.
You need to understand that there are alot of people who don't trust websites when it comes to payment. Having so many unpredictabilities make trusting that website even worse, so I would suggest lowering the risk for these people.

The point was it was supposed to be fun and random. I had nooooo idea that $4 would be such a big deal to everyone. Do you think it would make a difference if I took the time to catalog my thousands of titles, let people pick some, and then say it's first come first serve or you may not get what you asked for anyway? It doesn't make sense. I'm dealing with on-hand inventory. The time/expense of inputting that in and coding the site so members could create wishlists is just not possible. Maybe if I upped the membership fee but then who would really join?
I guess I severely misjudged the market. Oh well, anyone want to buy a couple thousand japanese comics and a developed site? How frustrating...
