If you're first starting out, I would consider contacting a business that sews other types of things (thereby not a potential competitor) and seeing if they would be interested/willing to have some pieces created for you. That way you may not have to invest as much money up front until your line grows (along with your income). You might also do a little research on this site: Dobizo.com, I found them through a quick Google search.

Hi. What kind of clothing line are you planning to do? I'm also looking into this.

I would start off with a search in Google and Yahoo for clothing manufacturers, and then find the place on their website where you can partner with them and take advantage of their manufacturing services.

tradeasy.com, alibaba.com - watch your step as those sites are 90% scam, 10% legit. Well...alibaba.com is at least, tradeeasy.com I've always had better luck with.

Shoot me an email sometime, I have been doing this for about 3 years and can probably answer a lot of the questions you have.

Ya i'd stay away from Alibaba. I've had some bad experiences with them.

Have you got the capital to start a clothing line and the support network that will be instant customers and essentially the driving force behind word of mouth advertising because of association?

This is a good idea, in fact its the same idea that I have (starting a clothing line that is).
Before jumping the gun, you'll need to have a business plan, an idea of who you're gonna shop to, and the best way of advertising. I have about 1000 friends, lol. I made them some shirts free of charge through a friend that i got while networking a lil. My "friend" owns his own embroidery store, and their friends want some shirts as well. So i charge a lil extra and embroider the shirts and keep the extra money as the business' earned income. The demand is pretty high now for my shirts! Wait til i make pants! Then jeans... and so on. Remember this... You can't do it on your own, and its too much work to trust new people, so ask your already established friends for help... Later hit me up if ever in need of advice... I'm still kinda new to this site tho, but not to business.

Try reading up all about the business by searching for it at Google. You'd want to know at least the basic SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) before you start it. Run the numbers and assess profit potential.
