Business Idea

I have been wondering about a concept for a business. This company would be an online investment group that will give investors exposure to the internet and tech market. It would have a structure similiar to a private equity group however on a smaller scale. We would raise funds from investors and use those funds to acquire small, poor growth websites and internet companies, improve them and sell them for a profit. Whenever a company is sold the investors in the fund that was used to buy that company will receive a return on their investment and then the remaining portion of the profits will go to the investment group.

The idea still needs more tweaking and research, but I wanted to get a few opinions.

Thanks.

Hmmm.. interesting idea. Like flipping a house.. There are all kinds of things to consider but if you could find sites that are active (making sales or generating income) and then add a little professional TLC you could have something.

If you are looking for investors please let me know when you have a business plan ready as I would like to take a look at it.

Basically a VC firm, but where you (as in you the idea proposer) can get in without any upfront capital?

I like the idea and a similar one has crossed my mind as well. If I am not mistaken you are taking about adding value to the investment for the purpose of either selling or holding and managing. In which case it would be like a PE firm but, as you mentioned, on a smaller scale. Of course there are other senarios as well.
My main question would be, are you thinking about doing the leg work yourself or recognizing the opportunity, keeping current management in place and having them implement your new strategies?
It might be beneficial for you and your team to fund a project or two for the experience before you go seeking investors. Hopefully you would be successful and thereby build your credibility.
Like I said, I like the idea - shoot me a PM if you want bang any ideas around.
Cheers

Charley

Sounds like it would be a nice niche that has not been explored but as you revamp it, it could be a nice venture. Good luck

You need a lot of expertise to pull this off. Not to add the VC required.
And the expertise do not come cheap. But a high growth, high risk and high return idea.

the smart option: if you wanna work in this space, apply for an analyst position with a venture manager
I can pretty much guarantee you that after you try out this "give investors exposure to the internet and tech market" job, you'll change your mind about making your self a career out of it

Hi,

I think the idea is creative, but the biggest barrier you will face, is actually putting together the partnership. People will get all excited, but when it comes to actually signing the papers ...... the smallest deal could take months, years, or never happen. It is very tough getting a deal together.

But it is creative - so congrats on that.

Rich

If you are still working on this idea please let me know. I’d like to talk to you more about it.
