Lightbulb A Speedway / Racetrack Business Idea

You all seem to be an intelligent group of business people. Looks like a good place to bounce an idea around I’ve been toying with in my mind for some time.

I’ve come up with an idea that has a lot of logistical challenges but I should give you some background first.

I’m a “jack-of-all trades” employee at a local racetrack/speedway, which races every Friday and Wednesday night. I feel after being a part of the racing industry for a few years there may be an opportunity to put my skills of video editing and video knowledge/talent to some good use for the race teams and fans in the form of a small video production company.

I’ve had numerous requests from drivers, teams and fans to tape the races in the past as souvenirs.

My idea is simply to gain permissions from the track. I would record onto video the events the most cost effective way possible – a manned camera from the roof of the broadcast tower following the action, and a stationary “catch all” camera at the end of one of the straightaways to catch any action (crashes) the main camera misses. The nature of my job occupies me during the actual events with other important business that cannot be left unattended, so a colleague who I have worked with on other projects would staff the camera.

Another company tried this a while ago, but they pulled out after not making enough money. This was almost 7 years ago now though (before the advent of affordable DVD technology for filmmakers), and the technology has improved a lot to make this type of endeavour much cheaper.

A strong market is already in place – 2000 to 3000 fans per Friday night, plus 700 additional crewmembers, drivers etc. Wednesdays has a VERY dedicated fan base of 100 fans (mostly friends and family of the drivers), plus drivers and crews. Not to mention sponsors of cars. I’m looking at producing these DVDs for 10-15$ (cdn) for a night of racing.

If it weren’t for start-up costs I’d already be all over this but they are a serious concern. I currently have no equipment – previous volunteer projects I have completed by pulling in favours from the school I attended, but I would like to get off on my own.

A typical race event is 3 hours long so I’m looking at having to pay my colleague for that amount of time.

I’m also looking at having to purchase two cameras (hopefully trying to find some used ones). I will also be purchasing a new laptop for editing, but I was planning on acquiring that regardless for other uses.

To pay everything off in one season (based on $12 a piece) I would have to sell around 350 disks (not out of the question in my opinion), which brings up another concern.

This is all very rough and preliminary. I’m certainly not going out tomorrow and buying a equipment, I wanted to brainstorm more first. Video is one of my great passions and I love recording events for people to enjoy as souvenirs. It also seems like a good long-term business opportunity. I don’t know that this endeavour would be a great moneymaker, but I am certain I can receive permission from the speedway to do it, as well as have a lot of fun.

My hope is also that by getting the equipment in hand, it would give the ability to work on additional video related projects in the community when racing is in it’s off season.

Any thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? Experiences to share? I’m all ears and looking for ideas. Thanks for reading!

welcome! good stuff

whilst there is no evidence that this venture is more profitable than alternative ventures, it sounds like a labour of love sort of thing, so I don't have a problem with your approach to opportunity selection (but note, you are not analysing this opportunity in relation to other opportunities)

so yeah, you're just gonna have to go and pitch the track owners for some sort of rights

i'm not sure....is this the kind of feedback you're looking for?

Yep, that’s exactly the feed back I’m looking for. Thank-you for the quick response! Hopefully many more to come.

You are correct, it is a labour of love. I’ve been involved in the racing industry for almost 7 years now I began working as an employee at the speedway just as I turned 14, working in the concession stand and am now involved with Announcering, groups coordination and many other things. This is a young entrepreneur forum – I’m just 19 now.

The other thing I worry about is if running this business would be a conflict of interest so to speak, whether or not I would be further ahead pitching it as a venture the speedway itself should undertake, as opposed to a private enterprise of mine. I do feel however, doing it as a private contract it would be more ‘profitable’ and open than if I did it within the context of the speedway.

I have no doubt that I would receive speedway support for the business, in some form. I’m also certain that my boss would have some very positive ideas about how to execute it. I’m just hoping to get some outsider perspective about the idea itself – just like you gave me!

Edit: I was a bit long winded lol

Not really. I'm located in Canada.

Did my story fit with an up and coming announcer from there?

Hey great idea. I am also a huge race fan, what division of racing? (Dirt track, sprints)? I think that like the other guys who tried it will take a little to get the word out and may be slow, but if you guys have diehard fans up there, then I think you could make a nice chunk of change!!!

if the track has reluctance maybe think of cutting them like a 5% share or something? how many straightaways do you have? might want a camera for each, (yes will cost more money but may get more wrecks or something).

Well hope that helps and welcome to YE. Good luck and keep us posted...

Great Idea!!!I race a local dragstrip (New england speedway)
http://www.newenglanddragway.com/
I am in the Import wars,it starts today, wish me luck,I have a 378whp acura street sleeper

We need more people like you in the USA dude.Keep in mind there are lots of restrictions on what the owners of the track can let the public do on the track.Try to make it the tracks event,so you dont have to deal with restrictions..And if the owners do want to help, they will positively want in on the money making action..Its not gonna make you a millionare if you can pull it off.But do it for the love man!!!!!

Yea cutting in a track is definately something that needs to be considered, I don't know about the 5%, they might want more, but definately more cameras would be a good idea, 4 at least i would say, to catch as many angles as possible.
Biggest thing would be how to get the dvds to them, at the end of the night? mail it to them? next time they come back to the track?

Exactly – delivery is one of the logistical challenges involved here (part of the reason I posted this ) I was thinking perhaps to have an order form with the option to have it mailed OR picked up. Perhaps charge a few extra dollars for mail outs?

What about a yearlong subscription program? Each race mailed to you? Convenience for the customer AND guaranteed income for the business that can be projected.

Somebody mentioned restrictions on what the public can do at the racetrack - - this does get complicated. When I walk around the track (as an employee) I am covered as an employee if I was ever to get hit by a car or debris (which in today’s modern industry is almost unheard of!). The employees of my separate company wouldn't be covered the same! Imagine the legal problems if something (even minor) happened to one of my employees. That’s part of the reason I’m keeping the manned camera safe on top of the
