Is anyone taking advantage of Facebook?

Being a social entrepreneur, I find Facebook to be my most powerful tool and resource. I'm building a couple "social" applications that I hope are able to transcend their respected industries, while doing "good" for everyone.

Is anyone else working on Facebook applications they plan to deliver soon?

Me and a friend of mine who are starting a foundation for Lupus and when we launch we are planning on making facebook a part of our marketing and advertising strategy. We both go to schools with nice size student bodies and facebook is pretty much the way to go. Let me know how you do with the apps. Do you know of any apps out already that might benefit a charity/foundation/non-profit?

Have you guys used the "Causes" app or any of the existing apps on Facebook pertaining to that? How will yours be different? Also, how long does it take you to develop one of those? Cool approach.

I am addicted to the Kiva "why I lend..." application. It is helping to spread the word. Check it out.

This was just posted on ideablob. The guy created a facebook app to support victims of natural disasters. He did it for the recent earthquake in China. Here's the link.

I haven't started my business yet, but I think Myspace is better than Facebook. Facebook is to confusing and too much work. I hated when everytime someone changed, added, commented and deleted something from their or someone elses profile, they would send me a bulletin.

The Android phone OS is going to be big in 2009 once the other phones come out. Create an app on it and promote and sell your products/ services on it. A lot of businesses are doing that now with the iPhone and iTouch.

GPOWELL - Facebook has something called privacy settings. It allows you to completely customize the amount of information you share, or don't share. You can also remove alerts, requests and notifications if you choose....

ESSENBOI - I've looked into Android and the SDK platforms. Both look to be a useful distribution channel, but I tend to think there will be only one or two platforms that will prevail from the mobile phone industry, kind of like computers (windows & safari). It doesn't make a ton of sense to develop apps for these platforms until their is a large user base that adapts to the advanced mobile technology....

Funny, I just posted in another forum about using Facebook to market and promote your business.

To answer this forum's question, Yes, I use Facebook to promote my business. However, I do not 'take advantage of it', instead, I have created a facebook group called 'Sand Shack' to reach out and reward loyal customers of my company. Although the group only has a little over 200 members, these members occasionally receive free gift certificates to my companies website: Sand Shack - Shell and Silver Jewelry | Shell Jewelry | Beach Jewelry | Cape Cod Jewelry | Located in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This is a great incentive to attract and keep members for my company's facebook group. It also allows me to see what type of people (by looking at profiles), actually use the gift cards and what they buy...which is great insight into my customer base.

Anyways, I haven't issued any gift cards for about 4 months, so I am getting ready to issue one to all group members sometime this week. Again, I am rewarding the members of the group, so these gift cards come with no catch, and everything on the website comes with free shipping, which makes it even a better deal.

I am not here to recruit members for my facebook group, but if you are interested in seeing how I use my FB group to recruit and retain followers, search for 'Sand Shack' on FB and join the group (the image is blue lobster), in the next few days you will be issued a gift certificate through a message that can be used on sandshack.com.

The key with a facebook group for your company is to make it rewarding! People won't stay in a group they don't have a reason to.

    Cheers,
    Brian
