FB - Social Networking Site or .... ???
Hello All,,

I'm just going to start off by asking a question. Is Facebook a "social networking site"? I want you to think about the meaning or idea behind NETWORKING. Think about what Facebook provides for you and then determine if it is a GOOD social networking site.

I'm interested in some feedback. After some replies I'll post my thoughts on the matter.

Enjoy Life,
Nick

Is there any one wanting to stand up to the question? I see a ton of young entrepreneurs and old alike with "great idea for social networking site" or "new, outside of the box social networking site" posting here. Lots of people want to find money to start it but no one seems to be steping up to answer a question about one of their biggest "competitors".

Would like to hear thoughts on the matter.

Enjoy Life,
Nick

I joined FB as most people indicated that it was a good media to promote your services/sites/business etc but i also joined Twitter at the same time but i found personally the latter to be the better one i guess if i fully understood how to use FB to its full potential then i would use that also.
So over to you how do you use it and do you use Twitter also ???

Hey Mega,, I do not use FB or twitter for promotion. Wrong demographic target for me and my services thus far do not really need to be promoted outside of locally.

But you stating that Twitter is a better networking/promotion tool does not suprise me. College demographic (could help you in one of your business' from what I see you do) however, college students (or anyone for that matter) dont join facebook to stay on top of people trying to suck them in. They have the ability to turn off your notifications and they do.

FB is a socializing tool, NOT a social network.

Definition of Social network: A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.

Now some one show me how facebook is DESIGNED to do that. Not how you CAN do that but how FB has purposely and affectivily created this. They have not. Facebook is a way for friends and family to stay in touch and avoid having to send a letter, pick up a phone or deal with them in a physical way. That's why its appealing. It's myspace 2.0

The whole point of this thread was to get peoples in put and to speak with the people interested in starting a social networking site. But it seems like the ones that are interested in starting a site are only here to ask for money. My suggestion to all of you is learn from facebook's success and failures (just like you should any business in your field) but do not consider them competition. They are not. If you consider facebook your main competition then you are not starting a social networking site.

I had more to go into this but I dont believe it will be read and responded to so I'll stop here.

Enjoy Life,
Nick

Facebook is hands down one of the best and simplest ways for you to get started promoting you business and services on Facebook. I know everyone is trying to figure out how to work Facebook and Twitter for their business. Check out the video here: How To Promote Your Business On Facebook | Rainmaker Marketing Blog. It shows you step by step how to setup Facebook to promote and network for your business.

Simply isn't true. Easy, yes. One of the best ways, NOOOO. Far FAR from it and too many people get lazy with it. The ACTIVE demographic is also limited. Network... HOW? How does it help you "network" your clientele. Even in this video I don't see it. It's like a sales pitch for a 60k a month job.

As the popular social networking site has increasingly focused its attention on global expansion and increased penetration across countries and regions, the site has catapulted to the #6 ranked Web property worldwide with 275 million visitors in February, a 175-percent increase versus year ago. One of the global regions that best illustrates Facebook’s growth is Europe, where the site has seen a 314-percent increase to nearly 100 million visitors.

Not only does Facebook have a growing audience, it is also a highly engaged audience with the average user spending three hours per month on the site. One year ago, Facebook usage accounted for 1.1 percent of all minutes spent online in Europe, but by February 2009 that number had increased to 4.1 percent of all minutes. Facebook also accounts for a full 30.4-percent of minutes spent in the social networking category, up from 12.3 percent a year earlier.

Facebook has very quickly taken a leading position across most of the European social networking market despite having a strong foothold in just a few European countries one year ago,” said Mike Read, comScore Managing Director of Europe. “Over the course of the past year, it has climbed the rankings in virtually every market and taken over the top position in several. Most recently, Facebook grabbed the top position in Spain after nipping at the heels of a leading local player for the past several months.”

I have a great idea for a social networking site. Everyone I have told it to thinks its genius. I have wrote a business plan and raised $5-$8,000 in funding. I am going to pitch more people over thanksgiving/christmas.

I started using my facebook account for networking, but I ended up getting more e-mails from old high school friends and family than anything else. I keep my links up but I do not think it does much good.

And for Twitter, I send out my tweets, but it only really generates traffic....no much in sales. But I'm not complaining traffic is good.

I think LinkedIn is a really good social networking sense, especially since it displays multiple levels of connection between people.
