Linked In is definitely networking in a truer sense. It actively encourages you to reach out to those in your field to aid networking. Facebook does have great promotional uses but most people I know only go there to socialize within their own circle.

Facebook can helps in many ways but after all it depends upon individual how he takes it. If he thinks from business point of view, it is a great place to promote anything. Or it can be utilize for fun like playing game and adding friends

Although Myspace dropped off the map in respects to Facebook and Twitter and being an ugly design I found it to be the most successful for networking and even getting customers/profit. Facebook seems very confusing to use and with features like the wall and poking another useless for anyone or business! Twitter is a fad at best for people that need to know a little too much about their false idols. I find the most effective networking sites are niche and grown by truly dedicated members like DeviantArt, Behance, YE..the list goes on.

Facebook is the medium to convey the message but it is not for the advertising of product or service.

Don't use FaceBook to aggressively market because I didn't really open it for that. Some say they have had success marketing on FaceBook, none of my (limited) marketing efforts have helped my online businesses.

For a local business, it works well. I own Visions Business Services, LLC, a technical services company, and FaceBook has gotten me great leads and some sales.

FaceBook, like the others, usually gets you in touch with an extension of your friends, old and new. That, by nature, tends to be more local.

I say enjoy FaceBook for the friends and family, sprinkle your links and see what happens... if you have a local business.

One more thing. Create a FaceBook Page and a badge ...get people to become fans...that has worked well for me.

Facebook has the most unique ad placement that any social network website can put out on the net right now. Its almost like a merge between an ad agency, and *ahem* google. Most of Facebook's ads look like a page out of Google's Sponsored ads strategy. Each has an image, which is why it looks like its been an ad agency that makes ads for internet websites.

But it is a social network, in the literal sense of the words, of course. Networking means that you meet a friend, and you can also meet their friends and friends of friends. It's also essentially a Twitter, but in an expanded way.

I see Facebook becoming the next Google with Twitter embedded.

    Hello everyone,

This is a nice topic. I have personally found facebook to be a more useful business promotion tool as compared to twitter; I get close to 40% of my business website's traffic from facebook. Of course not many people (myself included) are able to use facebook to its full potential.

I disagree with the point about the local marketing limitation, its about how you go about your marketing efforts. The most important aspect here is how you brand yourself on facebook. I run a logo design company, and although my target audience may not be vastly available on facebook, I get 60 to 70% of my leads from there. At the end of the day, its all about knowing how to find and engage your target audience.

Twitter is pretty useful as well, but as someone mentioned in one of the other threads, there is only so much you can say in 140 characters!

I think that FaceBook is ok. Although, I don't understand why it's so popular because it's like a alternative to myspace but of course a lot better than myspace.

I find niche social networks to be better as they are easier to use when you are just wanting a specific thing.

Facebook is amazing at accomplishing everything you need if you know how to utilize it correctly. That said, money can be generated off any social network if you know how.

Exactly noob! "money can be generated off any social network if you know how". People don't want to be spammed with all kinds of promotions and news, but they would like to stay informed on important updates or products the business might have.

The internet has brought the consumer closer and closer to the product and services. Social networking websites just happen to be a place where a lot of people hang out, so why not take advantage of the over 400 million people who use FB?

I'm interested in some feedback. After some replies I'll post my thoughts on the matter.

I find Facebook is good for managing relationships you have already established and keeping in touch with current customers. But finding new ones on there requires some creativity and a good concept for a group. I find fan pages are far too difficult to grow for brand new company and would suggest a facebook group instead at first. So, it is definitely a social networking site, but I have found limited success with finding new people and more so with maintaining contacts.
