What are the top five problems in your city, state, country, world?
I put education (lack of quality/access) at the top of most lists.
In my universe right now it is education, fuel costs and drugs.
I'm doing my part by launching a service that helps promote bring inexpensive renewable energy products to market.
I'm looking for renewable energy entrepreneurs.
Education Fule cost, Comodity pricess, and electricity problems are the major problems of my country and we people are still hoping for some good person to come and solve these problems.

Hmmm, I would play devils advocate and say that two of the sources for people being lazy are 1)public and 2)higher education systems.
I know a lot of people relate a degree to a lot of not-fun, hard, work... but I think the system allows them to put the most important part of the mind asleep... the part that actually thinks.
With that I would say education.
The biggest concern in my country is the educational system of learning. Nobody learns HOW TO perform a job, just ABOUT the general subject. For example after I finished College and got wanted to get a job, I had to re-learn everything as it is extremely "job-based". In one job you do it in one way and use this kind of system, and on another it is all different.
I am not speaking about "you learn the fundamentals in College" but a WHOLE new way to look at it a far less complicated system whereas in college you learn "a bit" about a lot.
Another thing is that taking the material for one course in college and reading and understanding takes less than a week. This is where a FULL 5 year college course consists of 16 courses=16 weeks. Obviously this is suggesting they use 18 hours each and every day to study(Yes this is possible).
When I find people who I want to work for me, I look at PERSONALITY as the main source of evaluation.
Sorry, to make my post linked-in with the threadstarter, I suggest making E-books free for anybody and allowing tests to be held for anybody to walk in take the test/tests and walk out with a FULL diploma as worthy as a college grade.
If you walk in take the legal-tests, pass them, you are "ranked" the same as one who just had 5 years education in it with the same grades.
I mostly agree Nordstrom.
A program where people would be responsible for their own learning is a step in the right direction. I would almost buy into a credited test program like you speak of.
The only problem is that it still relies on tests, which means they are still preparing answers for other people, based on pre-determined questions.
You do not usually find pre-determined questions in the workplace (employees do more often than entrepreneurs).
Progress is based on people taking time to ask a question then working on their own motivation to answer that question. A test based system be it school or certification, does not encourage people to ask and answer their own questions.
If there could be a (higher) education system that taught people how to think, reason, and learn for themselves I believe the world would progress much more quickly. Someday I might figure such a system out.
But then you have a hundred years minimal to establish the credibility of that system before it would be accepted in any degree comparable to traditional education.
Rant over.
PS,
As far as learning how to perform a job... the traditional education system would work better than my system. Working a job means you do what other people want. Traditional education teaches people how to do that very well. It often encourages surrendering your will to the will of the educational system.
My education system would bread leaders (entrepreneurs), not followers (employees)... and thus not be good at teaching people how to work a job, but teaching people how to create jobs.
Note: I am a higher education dropout. And somewhat proud of it.![]()

I'm also a higher education dropout. I wish there were more ways that real life experience could translate into credit toward a degree. Some colleges offer it, but not to the extent that I'd like to see. I worked in Antarctica for 4 months and learned so much. I backpacked around Mexico and learned more spanish that I'd learned in 4 years of school. Things like that.
I think mandatory financial literacy and parenting classes would go a long way to fixing society.
A world where everyone knows how to raise their kids, be responsible for their actions, and stop referring to the family home as an asset.... utopia..
Miami is full of uneducated mindless party animals...
