What are the social problems of today?
Off the top of my head:
1. Rising fuel prices: costs businesses and consumers. Has an indescriminate effect.
2. Rising food prices, and costs of living: All associated with rising fuel prices.
3. Mortgage stress: US subprime market collapse.
4. Obesity: this is a burden on the public health system.
5. Ageing population: problematic in a few decades when there won't be enough tax payers to support retirees. This is a current concern for Japan, and Australia, and no doubt other countries. Immigration is a viable solution.
6. Climate change.
I am personally interested in finding a solution to rising fuel prices and climate change. In a way, they are related. I am particularly interesed in finding a way to transport large volumes of goods and people cheaply.
I used to work for a cross-country trucking company. Nowadays, everything is trucked, even over long distances ie. cross country. Trains and ships might be a viable alternative for some situations.
Can anyone identify other social problems at this time?

Do you mean social or economic problems?
I thought social problems would be more like racism, elitism, stigma, stereotype etc.

The biggest problem that we have in the UK over the last 6 months is the Knife Crime and it is increasing every day i am wondering if the massive news coverage that it is getting is accelerating the problem !!!!

Those are all big problems. I don't know about the rest of the world but in the US health problems, particularly obesity, are getting worse. Mississippi is the poorest state in the US and has the highest obesity rate. Then there's hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, cancer etc.
Fortunately there are people working on this.

Knife crime in the UK does get far too much publicity! But maybe it's good that the problem is being addressed and not ignored.

global cooling in the 60's
and now its global warming.
we are our own biggest problem, if everyone was just at peace with themselfs we would have a happy world. fix yourself before you try fixing everyone else, and if your trying to fix everyone else dont be close minded, not everyones peace is the same. We all are unique and have the same tool as the next tool which happens to be the most powerfull tool in the world, our mind.
obesity isint a problem until you look at like one, who is to say some one is too fat, if it wasnt for us calling other people fat and looking down at someone for how they look obesitys only problem would be health hazzards, but it is possible to be big and healthy but even if you are big and healthy your sterotyped by the world jsut because your big. fuck stereo types
FUEL aint shit, if we werent so "independent" and only worried about ourselfs fuel would be cheap as fuck. we have more power than anyone thinks, if everyone worked together we could have the fuel companys listening to us, lets boycott for a day or two, for two days lets figure out a bus everyone can take or a train to show them what we are capable of doing, oh wait that will never happen because everyone only cares about themselfs and we wont ever work together enless its giving a couple dollars to chairty and making ourselfs sleep better at night.
i could care less about people in mortgage getting fucked over and losing there houses, DONT BE GREEDY
except for, there are some people that really did get fucked over and not because they didnt research there shit but mortgage loan people would take mexicans that barly speak english and these mexicans would put all there trust into there "loyal" broker or whatever that they were getting a good deal when really they are getting fucked over and are going to lose there houses and it really isint there fault. the world is corrupt, but everyone in my life isint and i live by peace

if i was president, i would raise taxes a shitload and with that i would give universal health care, and a gas card to everyone with a certain amount to use, but if you worked far you could file a complaint and get more for work.
i would let one person from every state every day go onto tv and say a problem from there area and have a huge audience and we would all do what we could to fix it
i would have a nap time during the day like the french do =] and we would all be happy
