Did anyone see the special this week on Plumpynut? It's a Meal Ready to Eat (MRE) peanut butter paste that is saving lives. I wonder how financially stable the Plumpynut venture is (and how)...really cool social entrepreneurship.

Normally a children's hospital 60 Minutes visited would have more patients than beds. But now, thanks to Plumpynut, it has empty beds. Dr. Susan Shepherd, a pediatrician from Butte, Mont., runs Doctors Without Borders in Niger.

I saw it too. Anderson Cooper said what people in general thought about Plumpynut, but it would have been nice to hear actual testimonials directly from those communities. I will keep my eyes on Plumpynut.

i remember seeing a special on plumpynut (awesome name haha) a while ago, what a good concept. hunger in developing areas is a bigger problem than people even realize, its sad stuff. props to the plumpynut guys

This stuff has been around for a few years now. Great idea and great product. Anyway to do similar things with really cheap agriculture products would do well in the same way. Peanuts, though, have tons of protein and other healthy attributes. Super cheap, ready to eat, health foods could do a lot of good in the world

how to stop world hunger? Hmm let me see!

Say you had a weighing scale and one side was weigh heavier than the other side. This can be compared to the problem of world hunger where some countries have a great abundance of food (so much so that they play with it, abuse it, throw it away) and on the other side there are countries where the people are dying of starvation or thirst.

Going back to the weighing scales it would be common sense to simply take some of the weight from one side and put it on the other side to balance the scales. So obviously this is the solution to world hunger. The abundance of food should be shared and evenly distributed. obviously its not as simple as that and it is made more complicated because of poeple in power. because of politics, because of people not wanting to share.

So the problem can be solved using simple logic but the main problem is getting the people who can bring about changes and get things done to care, take an interest and play a more active role.

You could probably solve world hunger simply by gathering and distributing the fodd which others thow away but obviously thats not hygeinic or feasible.

So the answer is balance, no fancy gadgets or food supplements etc...

Why don't they sell Plumpynut in the US and Europe? We have plenty of hungry people too, and on top of that EVERYBODY is looking for a quick grab and run meal. Plumpynut is full of nutrients and easy to eat. It is a hell of a lot better than eating a burger or having a whipped mocha venti latte whatever at Starbucks for way too much money. Sell Plumpynut to Americans, then use the proceeds to fund giving it to starving children in Africa. A company that makes windup radios to give to Africa tried this, selling their radio through electronics catalog retailers like C. Crane (albeit for way too much money) then using the profits to give the radios to Africans. The radio was sold as the ultimate garden and emergency radio. Food has a far greater base of potential customers than a funky radio, and Plumpynut sounds like something that could rake in BILLIONS of dollars of profit from rich Americans to feed starving children. If those adopt-a-child agencies can rake in dough by collecting money then handing out fake updates on the child you supposedly are supporting, why not this?
