I always thought that if I where to own a successfully and larger scale business I would try and hire people with families trying to survive in places of extreme poverty and violence, locate them, bring them to Canada, ( We are a country whose population would be declining rapidly if not for immigration at this point....some provinces actually pay parents when they have a child...)train and hire them, lend some cash for a place to live....these people would work harder and would be more loyal than you could imagine.....plus they would probably send money back home or be given the opportunity to bring extended family.

Bad idea... no good deed goes unpunished. When I started my company I tried hiring people who had completed work training at a local non-profit. I thought this would be my way to give back to the community. I had to fire all three of them.

Build your team with the best people... then you'll make enough money to support a local non-profit... don't mess with your business.

It's not a bad idea in theory. My only concern is being active in bringing people to Canada. My family tried to do something similar with a student I was teaching - my mom wanted to quasi adopt him. He was a good kid, but no opportunity. The kid was in Louisiana and my parents were in Delaware. He could never adjust to the culture shock and it ended badly (he's okay now, but back in Louisiana). I guess my word of warning is that culture can make this very difficult. Just something to be aware of.
