    Quick copyright question

I was wondering if the use of copyrights, normally found at the bottom of most websites is something which is necessary and companies actually file. Or its just kinda like a common thing to add "copyright company name" regardless of the legal status of the business name

Your question seems to be 2 folds:
    1) Do you need a copyright notice?
U.S. Copyright Office - Information Circular
"The use of a copyright notice is no longer required under U.S. law, although it is often beneficial. Because prior law did contain such a requirement, however, the use of notice is still relevant to the copyright status of older works."

    2) Whether you should register copyright protection for your website?

By placing "Copyright 200X Name" there, you're claiming copyright ownership of the material contained on the page, to the extent copyrightable.
