Plooka.com Launches - Now the real work begins!

Hi all, I'm a fan of YE but been a bit off the radar of late....there is good reason I have been putting together my biggest web project ever!

So would love to get some feedback, before I started this site I had no experience of Wordpress or Forums, so hope I have pulled it off.

It's all a bit cobbled together but hopefully I can get away with it, let me know any thoughts / design issues.

Find IE an Firefox displaying differently a bit frustrating.

Site is Plooka - Get on the Piste

Frenchie

Design is fairly rubbish. Its just not a good website. Its very amateur.

Should try to use maybe joomla or drupal for the whole site, this means forum and blog all in one.

Dont move here for snow. We bought a house on MT Buller and there is 12 cm snow. Its messed up right now.

Honestly, if you want a good website you need to use Joomla. Have a look at www.ski.com.au

You just cannot expect your site to be successful if it looks like that.

I think its functional to a degree, the webcam part is very good.

It's not amazing but I think it's fairly good especially for your level of experience. I like the look but I think it could use improvment in some areas.

Had a look at Ski.com.au - not massively impressed, seemed a bit bland. Plus that sites been going for 15years, its like comparing a brand new new service with the bbc!

Glad you liked the webcams.....

looking forward to checking out the snowfields near melbourne, hope things improve!

I sent you a PM yesterday but forgot to add anything constructive.

Some suggestions:

Javascript is terrible for Search Engine Optimization and it slows down loading times. You can achieve all the image manipulation and mouseovers using CSS.

The menu is difficult to read. Changing the opacity might look better. Add this code to #Layer8.

filter:alpha(opacity=50);-moz-opacity:.50;opacity:.50;

Thanks for all the feedback guys - good and bad! The site has been well recieved by friends and family, and our usergroup! So now the real work is starting to bite hard and busy promoting it! If anyone has any ideas / experience in the skiing world and hints, tips greatly appreciated!
