I would appreciate some feedback on my blog. I am trying to spur discussion about niche small business ideas there.

    ...welcome to YE.

Congrats - you've got a blog. It "looks" fine for having just started.
Unique/different content may be harder to come by...

May wanna spell-check a bit more...

It looks fine. You need to get more content up there before you ask for a review. As of right now there is nothing.

Post for a couple weeks and then come back to the forum to ask for feedback again.

Ok, hi Susan, welcome to ye. I'm gonna try to give you some feedback.

Generally: Blogging is a very different medium to how you'd normally write a diary, likewise, business blogging is yet again different to normal blogging. I like the fact that you're getting this whole idea about conversations, but you'll get better results if you can make some improvements to your format.

Conversations: When starting out, try to develop an extensive blogroll. Monitor what people on your blogroll are saying, comment on their posts, and write them emails when you've written something that links to them. If you consistently, use this technique of linking to current discussions, and emailing other bloggers - you'll have a successful blog on your hands.

Business Format: In today's world, business people subscribe to hundreds of feeds, not to mention hundreds of other bits of information. Likewise, with business blogs, you need to write in a certain format accessible to business people: headings, short posts, use of graphs and numbers.

Indeed, unless you are going to be controversial, or publish unique qualitative/quantitative data - the only way you can get attention attention, is by using a unique format for your blog posts (a format different to other people). For example: Ben Barren uses eye candy to catch attention, and Fred Wilson has regular weekly features on his blog, other people integrate their delicious links into the site etc..

Basically, being accessible is about you being able to slip into a category. We all categorise blogs we subscribe to so who are you? An entrepreneur blog? A marketing blog? A ideas blog? Figure that out, then highlight the unique feature that your blog has over the other blogs in its category. We all read the same things...so how is your blog different to the Gaping Void, Seth Godin? If you can highlight the difference I'll be interested....because differences make my reading experience better.

Start something like: Susan's Controversy....a blog where you rebut what everyone else says. That's an interesting blog.

If you don't slip into a well defined category in my RSS reader - I'm not gonna read you, because I have to prioritise and cluster my RSS feeds.

Personality: In your situation, because it's a blog, and if there isn't focus on unique qualitative/quantitative data, you need to highlight something remarkable about you as a person. After all, that's whole point of blogs - helps people find other remarkable people who they have something in common with.

Don't say you're a marketing manager: that's unremarkable. Say, I'm the person behind some marketing campaign xyz, which drove everybody nuts, and now you're sorry. Call your blog 0- "Marketingblunders.com". That's funny, and remarkable. I'll want to subscribe to your feed.

Finally: You asked for feedback. I'm telling you one thing - be remarkable. Remarkable means that there is something about you that makes me want to share your URL with my friends. If you wanted me to introduce you to someone, what is the one thing you'd like me to tell them about you (i.e. check out Susan, she's read 19,995 marketing books, or something equally compelling)?

Anyway...you seem pretty clever, have fun, and see how you go with these suggestions.

Your blog looks great Susan...I recommend you use a white background though for maximum readability.

There are a lot of blogs with similar missions to yours out there. You need to establish your brand to get through the noise. I suggest you start posting your own content to start with. Share some of your ideas and expertise to get the conversation started.

I would also suggest that you consider hosting your own site rather than doing it on blogger. Not only will it give you control and ownership of your blog but visitors will take you more seriously.
