    Re-seller hosting

I am starting a web design business and was also thinking about offering hosting services via a re-seller company.
Has anyone had success in this area and is it a good area to make money in or is it best to stick to Design.

    Thank you

I've hosted plenty of my sites with resellers quite a while back, mainly because resellers are cheaper. BUT NEVER AGAIN!

The problem resellers face (i.e. since you're going to be one) is that the hosting doesn't have a lot to do with you i.e. if the servers of the hosting company crashes, your customers will blame you, even if it's technically not your fault. =/

You will then be labelled as a scammer, and any business you have on the side (or front) might suffer. So that's definitely a risk you'll have to think about.

The resellers who hosted my sites were very lucky...(3 resellers, one after the other). Everytime the servers crashed and all the data was lost, I knew that they were only resellers and it wasn't they're fault. But other customers were not as understanding...

In my opinion, you should stick to design, but if you have enough for start up then host sites but not through a reseller account.

    Best of luck!

Thanks i understand the point and gave it good consideration and hopefully it would be a good earner along with the design business, but with my current skills i don't want to run before i can walk.

Interesting you brought this up. I have been considering offering a web designer's partnership with my hosting company. It would be like a reseller program but much better. I would offer designers credit towards anything they wanted to purchase on my site for each customer they signed up with my company. It would work somewhat like a referral plan. The designer would have the option of passing all, some or non of the credit on to their client. For example, I would offer $100 credit to the designer for 1 customer. They could use this as a "value added" bonus to get more customers on board by offering to maybe pay for their customer's first year of hosting or something. OR the designer can choose to simply pocket the $100 credit for himself/herself (buy VPS, dedicated server, whatever).

I have a few other projects in the mix before this one gets on the front burner. What do you think? There would be an easy log in page for designers to submit credit requests attached to clients. As a designer myself, I would love this, but what do you think? I am looking for someone to test this idea out with.

    Best,

Here's a list of cheap reseller hosting providers. Most of them also provide free billing software.
