My ideal domain name has been taken; ideas?

I'm developing a website that I wanted to call Idea Bin. The domain would have been ideabin.com, but a company called The Planet already has it, and I can't buy it from them unless I buy one of their servers, which isn't going to happen.

The .net extension is available, but I've always hated those. Is that a good option, or should I stay away from them?

So, what domain name is similar to ideabin.com? thoughtheap.com is the closest I've come that sounds decent, and it's available, but I could use an opinion other than my own.

Any other ideas would be fantastic.

The .net option is a possibility but only if that name is something you feel will make or break your brand and image. I say this because you may be routing your traffic consequently when people's natural reaction it so enter ".com". That may hinder your traffic or just discourage users.

I wouldn't post an domain name that you're thinking about registering that isn't taken. Someone might be a d*** and take it on you.

lol, i was just thinking that. but then again im not a d*** so im not going to do that.

but anyhow .com's are probably the best out of all the other extensions but companies and people have gone into .nets as an aternative because the .com was already taken. unless you really want the .com you can buy it from them at $xxx or even $x,xxx+ which i doubt you want to do.

You can always look at the registry status and possibly backorder it.

I agree stick with the ".com".

This happens to me all the time. Spend sometime looking on eBay, GoDaddy, and Sedo... sooner or later a new domain name will pop up that will work for you. Don't get discouraged because the name you think you needed is already taken.

    stick with a .com.

use a thesaurus and look up the word "bin". off the top of my head i think of "crate" and "barrel". idea could be "concept" "thought" "notion", etc...

    Great idea, I totally agree.

Sometimes it just takes some stepping back, looking over new options, and letting the creativity flow. Going with a .net/.org or what have you will just be a nuisance from the start.

The domainyou like ideabin.com expires in September. You should put in a backorder like suggested by Gr-Andy. I would stick with a .com and keep searching. If you see a domain name you like and it is taken, just send the owner an email and see if they are willing to sell.

I would buy the .net, .info, etc of any domain name I was purchasing as well.

obviously sticking with a .com is the ideal choice but because domains are so cheap these days i'd just register the .net as well and park the domain onto your account.

I agree though, I wouldn't post up your domain if you don't want it stolen.

Yes that's right. It would be foolish to post the domain names you are planning to register. I have used Domometer in private mode for checking if a domain name is good or not.

You could also do a "domain hack" such as del.icio.us, bit.ly. For my site I wanted addtoit.com, but couldn't get the owner to sell the name so I went with addto.it. This seems to be a great way to get a good name and then if the site makes enough money buy the .com later.
