Domains is a business in itself and is called Domaining. Many individuals and companies buy domains to resell for profit.

Many domains are not going to be affordable for a new business or small user...

Many domains start at $1k and go up to the hundreds of thousands.

I am not a domainer so I would not know for sure however I would estimate that the going price for my.com is above $10k.
