How processor/bandwidth (graphics, database, RoR?) intensive is your site? I'm hoping not too much if you are looking for a cheapo-type host. If you are looking for something a little more substantial, check out mediaTemple. They start at about $20 per month, but you could easily host a couple active sites on one account. As for cheaper, I've not had too much luck with PowWeb, but that's because I wanted something more than just a static web page to be displayed. I suppose if that is all you'll be doing with it, I'd vote PowWeb. Not sure what specials they have going on now, but the last time I had an account with them they were about $5 or $6 per month.

HostGator and Bluehost are two of the industry's biggest. They have industry-standard cPanel. If you're looking for good starter hosting, those two are the way to go.

I've used Bluehost for a while - since they first started up; I was on their 4th server. Now I'm off onto my own dedicated server, but Bluehost seems to have grown tremendously since I left them (1-2 years ago).

HostGator's introductory plan starts at $5/mo, and I've heard a lot of good things about HostGator.

Just make sure you're not running anything that breaks their TOS: CPU intensive sites, file-host sites, Proxy sites, etc. They're kind of restrictive since they're shared hosting.

Is $41 a year with GoDaddy hosting it a good deal?

Whatever you do, do NOT go with Godaddy. Their hosting provider doesn't have a great control panel, making it harder to switch servers. It's also not full-featured. I would highly recommend Bluehost and Hostgator over Godaddy.

    Hey,

1st) Just because you bought a domain you do not have to rush to get a host, it can sit for as long as you need to. Making the wrong choice in your host will make your life much harder in the long run.

    2) I should be more then able to host your site if you are interested. My shared plans start at $6/month, if you want to get something a bit bigger PM me and I may be able to offer you a discount.

    Get bluehost or gator host.

I used bluehost as the server space and the bandwidth is huje. I have over 40 websites running in there and their control panels are updated regularly.

If you want to make some money, you can even resell some of the space to your non-tech friends - you do need the technical knowledge to do it like changing MX entries and so on.. I made a few thousand dollars doing this.

Then again its up to your budget also. How much are you willing to pay for a hosting? PsiPro is right - do not rush into this. So what if your website is launch 10 days later? Decide carefully. ..

I have tried a few other servers in the past and most of them sucks especially when I wanted to migrate my websites elsewhere as they the webhosts company prefer to keep you.

Since gator host and bluehost can host unlimited sites, you only keep one domain with them. The other domains can bounce around to others hosts

    I recommend bluehost!!

A note for all of those hosting companies with such massive space allotments, they usually impose some other limit or restrictions.

Hostgator for example won't back you up, if you have over 50,000. Not a big deal just make sure you always read the fine print.

You can find stuff thats bad about them both. You really gotta make your own decision on what you think will fit your needs. I know Lunarpages.com is having a spring special right now where it is $4.95 a month. There a good host with great support and i dont know your specific requirements tech wise but I do know that lunarpages is one of my favorite hosts because of their support.

i meant to say this up there but didn't i didn't mean to say they are the wrong hosts i meant it has with shared hosting you can find bad things about all the hosts in the industry because of the nature of the business there are naturally going to be people that have a bad experience with them and alot of the time i find that reviews are either simple affiliate reviews that hide the bad stuff or its only the people who had a bad experience with them. Keep going on forums this ones good and so is webhostingtalk.com and find out the good stuff and go to a search engine and type in Host sucks (as in bluehost sucks or hostgator sucks) and you can find some complaints aobut hte company combine the two and make the decision on what you think
