I've been with Hostgator for a little over a year now. I checked out a dozen or hosting sites before choosing Hostgator. Previously I was with a premium hosting service. My site is using Wordpress and gets about 60,000 visitors a month. It has been performing fine. What I really like about Hostgator is that I get 24x7 telephone support. This has been invaluable. They have really been able to help me with a couple of problems right away, and on a high traffic site this is important.

My only caution is, is to back up your directory at least once a week. Their weekly backup overlays the last backup they make, so you might lose data if you ever need to recover. It happened to me once when Wordpress was hacked and I lost my database. I was using an unsecure Wordpress plugin, so I learned my lesson.

just thought i'd add my two cents. I have heard a lot of people talking about hostgator lately both good and bad on a couple different forums. They seem to be the number one host that comes up wonder why right now? but some other hosts that are similar are ixwebhosting good all around, hostmonster very good, and startlogic (good but i've had some issues with their support)

Either way check out my site to save money on hosting from some of the same hosts talked about above (sorry to plug my site but i figured you'd be cool with that b/c my site can save you money)

Check out MediaTemple. Never had a problem with them and very responsive to customer service issues.

HostGator is fairly large and have been around for a while so they are here to stay. But as someone mentioned, they are largely oversold hence slower network speeds.

I feel for you, and I hope these pointers will help:

1. Do your research. You want cheap web hosting, but not something so cheap that you will never get customer service or end up with your server down (as you have already found out).

2. Expect to pay for quality. In the purchasing of your hosting options, you have to expect to pay more than pennies for quality and service. Your hosting may cost around $20/month, depending on what your bandwidth and disk space needs are, and your domain name about $8/year for a dot com name.

3. Quantity is a lie. Most web hosting companies tell you they will give you 50,000GB of bandwidth and 500GB of Disk Space/month for a $30 web hosting package. Some even claim to provide "unlimited" bandwidth and disk space. This is a lie. If you ever used that much gigs or bandwidth in a month, they will kick you off. They are simply trying to dazzle you with large numbers because they know the average person isn't going to use that much anyway. Most small companies are lucky to even use 5GB of bandwidth per month and 1GB of disk space/month. Don't pay for what you are not using (or even getting in this case).

4. If you are outgrowing what is called "shared" hosting space and bandwidth, you might want to invest in a Dedicated Server or a Virtual Private Server (VPS).
