hopeful site launch in august - few questions!

Hi!

I have a site that I'm planning to launching end of August and its going to be somewhat of a facebook idea, but for a more specific demographic and obviously contain content and advertising catered to that demographic.

My question is, how does web pricing work? I know its about $10 to register a domain and then theres hosting fees - do the hosting fees work on the amount of storage needed for data in terms of kb/mb/gb/terabytes? Where should I look for these rates/prices?

Also is there specific pricing to have a forum on a page?

Thanks,

Zlad.

Your right about domains. On the hosting side of things, you normally say a monthly fee and are given an allocated amount of storage and bandwidth to work with. Pm me if you've any questions

The hosting fees are going to vary based on your needs.

Do you need RoR? Do you need Cold Fusion? etc. etc. Any specialty software can add a lot to the price of hosting.

If you just need basic web-hosting (which is probably what you do need) there are a million options.

I strongly recommend you do not chose a host based on the amount of space or bandwidth you get. There are plans out there where you can get 1TB or more for less then $10. Keep in mind a server that is really suited for shared web-hosting will cost between $400-$1500/month if your renting it. If the hosting company buys it, the cost is $3-10thousand + electricity + maintenance + backbone connections.

Now the largest HDDs in use right now are 1TB, although most companies use smaller then this. Lets assume they are using 4x1TB drives in their boxes. This means they, without overselling, can fit 4x1TB accounts in the server (This is with NO local backup as well). Obviously this set-up would earn them <$40/month. Now lets assume 50% overselling, a reasonably number in some cases... but not here. So they oversell and now have 6x1TB accounts on a server that only has 4TB of space. If 4 people on the server decide to use up the maximum space they purchased, its all over and someone is getting booted.

As for bandwidth overselling, its not really that big a deal because your limited by the server's connection more then the transfer you have purchased.

The moral of the story is, you need to look at the price your paying / month and say to yourself... "How many other people need to be on the server with me for this company to break even?" because more people means higher load and more instability.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Taking into consideration your needs, I can recommend you to check apthost.com web hosting plans. It will be productive to contact their support team via liva chat and ask them about the hosting solution you need, telling them your specific requirements and budget. No doubt, their highly trained experts will assist you in making the right choice.

How exactly did you do this without him posting any needs?

Personally, I would check out GoDaddy.com for shared hosting first. I know you have big plans, but you should think cost effective first and slowly progress as traffic shoots up. The facts are its a monthly charge, but they collect ahead of time so that you dont have to worry every month. The storage data varies from web host to web host, but wherever you go they will usually give you more than enough for what you paid. I hope that helps in your decision.
