    Domain name appraisal

Ok, so I just started getting involved in domain name trading, but one question that remains unanswered is how to put a value on your domain names. I've tried out several free appraisal services, but those are pretty sketchy, as it's just an algorithm based on word/character count, search engine results, etc.

For example, I just recently purchased nominate2008.com (not a great domain name, but I got it for $0.99 on eBay, so I figured I'd give it a shot) and ran it through the free appraisal system at Nameboy. It put a dollar value of $8134 on it, which is complete bull.

So my question is, do you have to get professional appraisal done to get an accurate estimation of value? It seems like the cost of some of the services could be greater than the value of the domain name itself, which is why I'm dragging my feet a bit.

A domain name is only worth what a buyer will pay...period. You have to find the right buyer that sees value in the domain name and it's up to you to convince them of that.

Appraisals are only an "opinion" and can never be accurately appraised by a computer due to factors such as PR ranking, when it was registered, how many characters, etc. Keep your money and use it to build a site on it, promote the domain name, get it out there working for you. Get it noticed, then put it up for sale.

Personally, I only register or buy domain names that I know I can sell later or make money with. I do my research, find a decent .com, build it, promote it, move on to the next one.

Bottom line...don't waste your money on appraisals and a domain name has NO value until someone wants to buy it.

That is correct for that personal domain I would shoot for mid xx range. Try listing it at namepros or other domain sites. (search google for domain name forums as theres others)

If you are serious about entering the domain real estate business, go for it like a business man.

Don't just buy anything you see cheap to sell for a higher amount. Research the domain, upgrade the registration for at least 5 years, build a stop page and promote it make it get some value.

Buying 10 domains at 0.99 cents in e-bay and you don't sell none of them is a loss. While you can buy 2 for 10.00 upgrade the registration and sell each one lets say 200.00 thats profit.

Like thinkaholic said "A domain name is only worth what a buyer will pay..." because superdupercarshow.com sounds great dosen't mean you will end up selling it for $1,000.00 maybe you will but maybe not.
