Twitter as an online marketing tool
I've just signed up with twitter, although I'm still clueless as to how I can use this site for online marketing. I know how to 'twit' but how do you get people to follow you? If you can throw some ideas at my direction, I'd truly appreciate it. thanks.

You should find a way to monetize it (i.e. find something that most people would be interested in and list it as your status) just as an example, join the amazon associates program and then use your affiliate link in your twitter status. I've heard twitter traffic doesn't convert so well but hey it's free traffic.

Hi I know of something that will help
I was just using twitter the way that you are, and following people who had high numbers and getting followers that way. But I didnt get what I needed to know until I used what I learned in this course called twitter traffic exposed. There are some strategies and tricks that you need to learn in order to really get a big following and turn it into traffic. Check it out in my profile

you just have to tweet about something people are interested in, and post a link. It will not give your website value, but it can convey the value to others

If you have enough followers, you'll gain some traffic through Twitter. By enough I mean at least a couple thousand.

In the relatively short time that I've been using Twitter, it's completely changed the way that I handle my internet marketing. If you've ever used social networks for business, you'll be able to do 10x as well, 10x as quickly with Twitter. It takes a bit of time to wrap your mind around the concept of Twitter, but once it clicks, it becomes a very robust tool for any entrepreneur. I've had pretty good results generating traffic with a relatively small amount of followers, because of ReTweets and referrals. The best benefits I've seen is the ability to instantly network with people from every facet of life.
I'm doing a new training course for business owners and entrepreneurs wanting to learn how to use Twitter in their business. Take a look if you're interested. Guaranteed to help Any business in Any industry!

It's just another one-to-many communication tool for telling people what you're up to, and is EXACTLYU like facebook's status update, but more limited. In fact Twitter is like any other social network in respects to getting traffic from it directly.
IF you have a pre-existing site, you merely tweet about your latest post. "PersonX: is writing about the latest political infighting in Uzbekistan - uzbekpolitico.com" or whatever your blog is about, and whatever the address is.
You can't make money DIRECTLY off twitter. Most affiliate URLs, particularly for things like Amazon, are too large, and most people resent having a URL shoved in their face when they don't know what it is.
IF you happen to be running the sort of site that people would return to regularly for new content, or you're some sort of mediocre celebrity (i.e. a "guru" that needs their charming teeth kicked in) that is a celebrity for being a celebrity, then yeah, it's awesome, and it gets more people following you, and you can link them through to where you make money.
If you don't already have heaps of people following you, then you can do one of a few things: - Start following others, hope that they add you in return, and then dump them unless you actually read them. It takes ages, but there are some automated tools out there now if you don't mind doing it the blackhat way
- Produce "quality" tweets... however the hell you produce quality anything in 140 characters. People will eventually follow because they'll tell their friends.
- Link bait. Post controvertial BS, and peopel will flock because they'll tell their friends... Especially if you can keep up a BS story, like the guy that does professional media hoaxing.

what is your business and business model?
Depending on which keywords are relevant to your business, you should use Twitter Search to find tweets that pertain to your subject area. Thereafter, yolu should become an expert in your field....the more you tweet "useful" the followers will come! You can also use other twitter tools to track conversations and automatically respond for you - see Target Marketing on Twitter | Introducing you to people like you, near you! - TwitterHawk
I know of one business which fixes brakes on cars, they search twitter for the keyword brakes within a 10 mile radius of their shop (use advanced search) and they close 2 in 10 tweets on brake jobs in their area! WOW!
Twitter is powerful if used right.....we also have an entire area on social media, which includes a 1 hour video seminar on soical media optimization and how to use it to improve your business as well as a Social Media Blue Print to get you started on Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. at TheTrafficVault.com
Hope this helps and follow me on twitter for more tips @AndrewHazen

I have been tweeting about business, self development, and pretty much anything else that I am interested in. I am only following the people that I think are interested, or that are an asset to my feed.
I set up an account exactly a month ago. With no overt promotion, I now have (let me check).. .. 99 Followers. After the first week, I had 24 Followers. My numbers have been increasing twofold approx. every 7-10 days. At this rate, I should have approx. 400-550 by the end of April. Let's see if it works!

It is like other social networking.. You add friends.. In Twitter you don't add friend but you follow them and they will follow you back.
