SEO is technical efforts to get your site visible using natural search, PPC is just buying those keywords. It depends your ROI, which method will be more suitable as you do not have reasons to use both.

I wasn't talking about Search Engine Optimization, I just find it humorous when someone trys to explain an acronym with another acronym in the explanation...that's all. I'm guessing enterprise 2.0 is related to Web 2.0. And since it's called 'enterprise' it's related to business. And since it's called 2.0 I guess it's related to using the web as a platform for business (in this enterprise case) and communication? That's my guess...I'm probably totally wrong haha.

Basically, using new philosophies and methods that small companies have used within big corporations.

There are reasons to use SEO and PPC concurrently.
You may want to rank for terms that you can't afford to rank for via PPC due to competition or quality score.
There are also a number of particularly arsehat SEO methods that you can use to raise your rank by lowering others.

This is a pretty good explanation- but I wanted to elaborate on it a little bit.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is manipulating your website content / layout / coding to rank well in the search engines (the "natural" or "organic" results- or the regular ones).

PPC, or "pay per click" is using Adwords or a related program to "purchase" keywords so that they will appear either in the right hand column or top section where there are "sponsored" links.

When you utilize PPC, do you pay for the cost up front or do you pay google per click when someone clicks on the link, then you get paid. Meaning, is it an up front cost or do you pay out as you get paid? Thanks

Sandersr: You'll need to register a valid credit card with most PPC companies (it's not just Google after all... Lots of places offer PPC), and they'll bill at at the end of whatever billing period they stipulate (usually every 7 days).
Google DOES offer the ability to load your account with credit if you only want to spend a certain amount though.

There is a lot of confusion with the terms sometimes... search engine marketing is also a popular one. Most people use it to describe PPC campaigns, but we use it to describe a combination of on-site optimization (Search Engine Optimization) and link building - specifically links that we know will affect a site's organic ranking.

Regarding ROI, long term, SEO & link building is usually the better bet. The click-through rate on organic vs. paid results is something to consider.
