Proper keyword density for the page should be 2-5% which helps the web page Search Engine friendly.

Keyword Density
Keyword density is best one to get recognized by the search engine, so we have to concentrate on it and it should be 2-5% in the website so that visitors may think in positive way.

I personally shoot for between 3%-7% to get indexed fairly quickly and ranked high. Anything higher then that will be penalized by the search engines for keyword spamming.

I don't understand how you can write something and keep it sounding nice if you focus on how many keywords should be inserted into it. I know it is important, but it is so difficult.

Its all about writing quality. If you write an article and your keyword density is too high, just write a little more to it. This'll help lower the keyword density in the end.

I personally believe that keyword density within a page has little to no importance.
I have ranked sites with 0-1 % keyword density. I believe that its not the most important factor in ranking in the serps.

Agreed - I don't pay much attention to keyword density and I do SEO full time, both for myself and clients. I always encourage everyone to write copy that is readable, and that people will be willing to link to - that is the major factor.

It seems like the most people have a consensus that 5% is about what we should keep it around. Does this include ALT tags or the header? I've looked at tools on the net to calculate this... but they seem to work differently. If I put my keyword in a lot of my pictures, will it affect my keyword density?

Yeah, 3%-7% will usually do the trick for me as well.
