I totally agree. One link won't help much but the sum of them will definitely help. Everything counts. For starters, AdWido has a nice place for you to try submitting sites to as well as some other services.

It is one way of getting links. Don't focus your full time on it. Go for only free submission without reciprocal link. In a reasonable time you can get approval from some good directories.

Directories

Directories hold little weight these days. They're not what they use to be. Now they're a dime a dozen, poorly managed not to mention here today and gone tomorrow. The traffic is almost all from newbie webmaster's. When is the last time you wanted to find a site and used a directory instead of a search engine? Probably like me, never. There is only a handful of good directories out there.
But if you get bored one day and want to submit to some it won't hurt.

Directory submission helps in listing your site and possibly have its exposure but it should not stop there. You can do it with other marketing ways.More combination of strategies is much good in getting your target.

I agree. Backlinks from sites such are directories have lost lots of value over the last year. A good rule of thumb is this:

The more difficult to get a backlink, the more valuable it will ultimately be to a matrix like google pagerank.

Cheers

Directory submission is still effective thought it takes a while to get results. It usually takes two to three months before the administrator or webmaster approves your URL.
