I have just created and am finishing up my new website. What I want to know is how can I get people to sign up. I am handing out flyers to my target market (sports players, fans etc) I want to know of other ways to get the word out. Any ideas??

Here's my top 5 ways to drive traffic to my site:

1. Stumble Upon.. download the toolbar and stumble your site
2. Write keyword targeted articles and post them to the article sites (tip from guy above is the most popular right now)
3. search for a forum in your target market (sounds like sports - theres plenty of sports forums) sign up for the forum and start talking to the ppl... after getting to know ppl for a a few weeks add a link to your site in your sig and give ppl a reason to go there (something free).. ppl in the forum will see it and go to your site
4. socially bookmark your site... go to digg.com, onlywire, del.icio.us... and sign up for an account.. then go to your site and bookmark it to these social site..
5. directoryofezines.com it lets you buy space in ppls email subscriber lists... for like 70 bucks you can send an emaio top a list of 100,000 ppl... not all will be interested, but im sure you could find a list of target customers...

ps.. the other guys tips are great too.. youtube gets u traffic when ur video is viral so if ur going that route make it interesting.. oh and dont forget to stumble and bookmark you video and any articles you post to the web...

All the suggestions are good, i will only add that you should determine where you kind of potential members hang out or visit and follow them there with your articles, posts, logs aand keywords.

When I launched my site I contacted my home town newspaper and asked them to do write up about the launch, they agreed and after they printed the story the article was picked up by several other newspapers around the state.
I also contacted all the blogs that operate out my home state and asked them for their support. A majority of them agreed and produced a write up on their blog that included a direct link to my site.

This worked great. I also printed business cards and sent to them to my friends who live in big cities (SF, NY, MIAMI, DALLAS), they in turn passed them out, left them in local coffee shops, etc...

Google Adwords worked great too.

Sounds like your looking for local traffic if you are handing out flyers.Put cheap effective small ads in local newspapers promoting your site.Put ads in sports section and other desired locations

Because we don't know what kind of site you have other than sports-I can't evaluate what you have as content or what you don't have. People need a a good reason to want to join another website.
