The meta keyword tag is practically useless. (This was not the case, in, say, the 90's) Yahoo has stated that they consider the tag in determining what search results to include an URL in, but that the tag has absolutely no effect on the ranking at all. Google and MSN haven't even gone that far.

Title tag (which is actually considered a meta tag), and the meta description tag are important (description tag doesn't help rankings either, but it improves click through rates by giving the search engines a nice bit of text to describe your site in its listing).

It's known that there are a few hundred factors in Google's algorithm. No one outside of Google knows all of them, there are about 10-15 things I look at on a given site. Don't want to explain them all in the thread.

There are probably a lot of good articles on on-site optimization, check around for those. Our blog also has an article about 13 link quality guidelines, focus on getting links that meet all or most of those requirements, those types of links are what search engines really appreciate.

It's quite complicated but yeah meta keywords, and using the right combination of keywords that is usually searched most can help a lot.

    Good luck!

Having link popularity works better. However, it can't hurt to have a bunch of keyword related tags. Try adding your website to a bunch of other related websites for link popularity.

Link popularity is just having a whole heap of backlinks from decent quality sites back to yours.

You don't want links from any old source though. They need to be from places that search engines consider trustworthy. Do a bit of research into SEO and backlinking. There are some good free tutorials about the place.
Don't pay for it though... Anything in an eBook/"info-product" is generally just something you can read on a forum for free anyway.

There's no proof that search engines don't use meta tags so don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise. Anyways, visit this posting on my blog to learn how to optimize your website.

Actually, even a US Court says meta tags don't matter.

US Court Learns SEO, Decides META Keywords Don't Matter

I've never found an outright statement by Matt Cutts that Google ignores it, but that is the overwhelming consensus among SEOs. People have been talking aba out the irrelevance of meta keyword tags for years now.

    website Rankings

Google requires quality links, i.e., sites with relevant content, not too many links on the page and also links from within the content of the page rank higher. Yahoo focuses more on quantity so if your keyword ranking is higher in Yahoo than Google you may need higher quality links. It is very hard to rank well in both engines. For more information Google Goggles | Quality Score | Put On Your Goggles
