You should certainly learn about ways to optimize your website so you can achieve organic search engine rankings....I've optimized sites and they appear on the first page of google, that gets me a TON of FREE web traffic....

You can also use social media to try free traffic to your website, whether it's a forum, blog, post to an article, answer in LinkedIn or Yahoo Answers, etc., you can drive significant traffic. Twitter is also powerful and Digg and Reddit

most of us would agree that a se putting paid advertising sites first in listings, but not telling the user that those first listings were "Sponsored Results," would be shady.

It's best to get a pro to do it for you, else you might go broke trying to do it yourself and not seeing any meaningful results.

PPC advertising can be very expensive. It can also be very worthwhile, depending on what you are selling. If you can tune your landing pages well for optimal conversions and lower your minimum keyword bids, you have a great shot and creating a very profitable marketing campaign.

Of course this is easier said than done. It requires a lot of testing and practice but if you can eventually get it right, it can be well worth it.

You're probably best off utilizing PPC with other methods such as SEO, so you can at least enjoy generating some organic traffic that wouldn't cost you anything.

Some of the CPCs amaze me...

I have a network of AdSense sites that are displaying ads people bid as high as $15 a click for. I could never pay that much for a click. I just try to rank #1 for the phrases in organic results, and sit back and collect on my share of that $15.

Depends really.

I use pay per click advertising that carries a six figure income. It's expensive every day, but so long as your making money, there's no limit on expense.

However, if you want make some initial investments and start hitting the submissions, the long run is you will achieve much better results. If you use a service, it can cost up front money. If you go PPC, it costs much more as you go.
