Most SEOs agree that sig links are devalued by Google's algorithm (link sigs with targeted anchor text are about the oldest trick in the book), in addition to the fact that a sig link on a forum page is sharing the page's link authority (which is usually miniscule anyway) with dozens or even hundreds of other links (footer, header, nav, profile, other sig links, etc.) It is also known that the more links you have on a particular domain, the less each one is worth. I once read a discussion where the moderator of one of the big SEO forums (I think it was SEOchat, can't remember for sure) said that he had over 21,000 sig links, and having done his best to track rankings, had seen literally no change based on them.
I've found that it's not bad for direct traffic, which is why I do it.
