Number one principle is to actively participate in the communities you join, and avoid directly promoting your site (at all costs).
You need to make sure your profile is fully completed and contains links to the sites you're promoting. As you participate in the community and people come to know and like you, they'll check out your profile and click through to your sites from there.
Membership of the social networking site itself does not bring you links (in the eyes of Google) because links from your profile all go through re-directs - so they're of no value. You get links from people who like what you do/say, check out your profile, click through and link directly.
It's no different from how you would network in real life - except that you're doing it online.
Many of the social sites have an RSS facility that allows you to distribute and publish your blog articles in your profile. I prefer these sites, and always make use of the RSS facility if it's there.
