Free link directories?? Do they help with page rank??

Yes definitely submitting your free directory sites helps your site in getting indexed, but it takes some time if you submit in directory sites. If you submit your website in Social Bookmarking sites your site will get indexed in just 2 or 3 days.

Roger, I'm gonna throw this out there that I think it's shady to try to promote your own site like a disinterested observer. Come out and say it. I respect that. But to say, "Hey, you can do well with a site like this. It's a pretty good site," when it's yours just scares me off.

You'd better submit your site to some relatively directoris,and i think you'd better check it out whether it have PR,i think if it have PR,i think it's better.
