    What kind of Web Hosting?

Hey everyone wanted to get some opinions on what kind of web hosting service i need for my site. It is a social network similar to you tube. Starting out how much hosting do i need? Also what are some great and reliable hosting companies?

    Thanks in advance

I wouldn't expect much traffic on a new site. I'd just get a regular shared account until you need to expand.

I would recommend hostgator, but because its a youtube like website you might need a host that support ffmpeg.

    Hi,
I would recomend JustHost, its only £2.95 a month and you get lots of unlimited things -- which would be good if there's going to be lots of videos on your site. They also have excellent customer support if you have any problems

There's no such thing as "unlimited" web hosting. They have hidden limits in the Terms of Service. I wouldn't expect to get very far before they closed your account.

No such thing as Unlimited. Don't be taken in by it.

Start with shared hosting. Just make sure that your host has an easy migration path from the shared account to something more robust if/when you need it.

I prefer to have so called unlimited hosting, not because I am going to store very large amounts of data on there, but because it seems a lot better value than the companies offereing say 2GB web space for the same amount of money. Plus, I decided that this unlimited package on JustHost had a lot more value than, say, FastHosts or someone else. Anyway, I am very happy with my JustHost package.

I personally use JustHost. Although they advertise "unlimited" that doesnt seem to be the case (ever).

The only limits that I have found, that apply to me, are these 2 rules
1)"We reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to discontinue service to any customer with a website or other hosted data that takes up more than 10% of the server resources and/or 10% of the server's CPU."
2)"Accounts found to be exceeding the 50,000 inode limit will automatically be removed from our backup system to avoid overusage. Every file (a webpage, image file, email, etc) on your account uses up 1 inode."

So unless you are going to host a lot of files or have a high cpu/memory intensive website, you should be fine with JustHost.

I have heard of some people having issues with them however I personally havent had one issue and I dont recall any period where there was downtime on the server.

Here is what you need to know.

Before you purchase hosting, you need to know if you need a linux or windows plan and this is not based on your operating system however the program / website that has been developed, PHP is the most used hosting type however larger companies tend to go with ASP. If you have a regular html static website then either account type will suit you just fine.

    Below are phases
    Phase 1) Shared Hosting
    Phase 2) VPS
    Phase 3) Dedicated Server
Phase 4) Co location with your own server

    Make sure to watch:
    bandwidth
    storage usage
    uptime and speed

I recommend Bluehost for starting out (shared hosting), then SingleHop for managed hosting as an upgrade, then Amazon EC2 on your final upgrade.
