    Question Web design apprentice?

    Hello everyone,

I came across this forum a few weeks ago and after following it's useful threads and interesting conversation, I finally decided to join and see if I can get the answers to a few of my questions

I'm currently looking for a web design company to take me on as an apprentice and to teach me a few things that I'm unsure about regarding offering website design as a service to paying customers. I would not want to be paid for any work at all and at the moment I can already offer custom ebay templates fully HTML coded. (I could do some of these for you in return for some guidance on web design). Any work you set me can be done for your company and this would not be a time-consuming thing for you since I am currently studying for my GCSE's (aged 16) so I'm only looking for something very small-scale and manageable with my current workload.

I'd really like to get some experience and first-hand knowledge under my belt before I reach college since I'm coming stuck on a few key things. These include, how customers would edit a site made without needing to edit straight into the coding? Whether customers do ever need to normally see the coding? etc. Basically I can design and code in HTML. Anything past there is a bit of a grey area for me.

As I appear to need 10 posts to PM, I'd really appreciate it if anyone who may be able to help me out could either post below or simply email me at: photographz[at]hotmail[dot]co[dot]uk

    Best Regards,
    Shadow

    Hi there,

I can't help become an apprentice, but I can answer your question about end users updating the site. Most end users do not want to be bothered learning to update HTML. It used to be they either had to learn, or else they would pay someone (maybe you!) to maintain it for them and update it when necessary.

Content Management Systems (CMS) have changed all of that. The vast majority of sites out there either already use a CMS or could benefit from one. The most popular open source CMSs are Drupal, Joomla, and Wordpress. Basically these are programs that you install on a web server that have a web interface for adding and updating content. Instead of coding each page, you code a theme, and the CMS automatically generates the pages on the fly. Start playing around with some of the tools I listed above.
