    Lightbulb Laptop vs Desktop

    Hello

When starting any new business, keeping the costs under control is important, so you need to make the right choice when it comes to choosing your technology. Choosing a laptop instead of a desktop computer will drastically reduce your energy costs! Did you know that a laptop uses up to 90% less energy than a desktop computer?

Considering recent rises and forecast rises in energy costs, is there really any other choice for new business?

    Thanks

It depends on the intended use of the system. Some power users cannot get by with most laptops because they lack the extreme system requirements of their jobs. Many developers work with processor intensive programs, as do many graphic and video artists. And if you begin looking at Macs, your expenses become very skewed when you look at initial acquisition costs of the hardware. A base model Mac Book will run you about $1000 for a 13" screen. A base model iMac will run you about $1200 for a 20" screen. Add on additional hardware costs to get a powerful machine and there goes your energy savings for the next couple of years.

For the average computer user, I'd agree with you. But there are going to be a good number of users that need more power than a laptop can give.

It depends what type of laptop you are comparing it to because there are a few different types ie desktop replacements, thin slim line ones, buisness ones etc.

Laptops have a great advantage in terms of their portability. If you carry a laptop with you, your applications and documents are always immediately available. With a wireless card, your laptop can also access the Internet while on the go, so you have more places to do research, check your email, and be more productive.

I have had a laptop as my primary machine for about 5 years now. I am never going back to a desktop ever again. The graphics cards in the laptops now are sufficient for gaming as well, so I am not lacking at all. In the office, however, there are desktop machines for everyone, and those that travel a lot have laptops as well.

    Clare,
I am very big on mobility and not being fixed to a single location. Desktops just don't provide the flexability needed in today's enviroment. We have gone completely to virtual desktops all we need is an internet connection from any device. We are developing this service for production and should have a price point of $85 a month which will included Microsoft Vista (or XP) & Office Profesional. We feel this will be great value for small businesses that don't want to spend $1000+ and have to deal with all the problems fixing, repairing, replacing technology constantly.

    Thanks,
    David

    I love having a desktop computer. I work with 2x 24" screens.

I also have a laptop when I'm on the go. I'd recommend both though . I use my desktop a lot more. It's a beast for the simple work I do.

I like using a laptop because you can be mobile with it. But I'm using Desktop right now...seems better when dealing with heavy graphics.

I'm a developer and I go desktop. I have my dual 19' wide-screen monitors, keyboard, external speakers with sub-woofer, and trackball and I wouldn't trade it for the word. I have a laptop (three actually) but I never use them.

This depends on the nature of business or purpose. I get faster results (or renders) doing 3D with a desktop rather than a laptop. But I would save lots of space doing documentation/manuals with a laptop.

I use both. I use my desktop for my projects and other things I need a fast, reliable, powerful system for and I use my laptop for personal use, financial stuff, YE, blogging, etc. I also use the laptop to take to clients to show them designs, or draft something quick up for someone at a meeting about a design.

It's all in what you need I guess.
