MacBook Pro all the way. Buy it with VMWare Fusion and WinXP or Windows 7 (October '09) and you'll be set to go. You'll be able to enjoy the best of both Mac and PC worlds.

Sure its true that laptops save energy, but you also need to consider that laptop batteries only last 1-2 years. They are $$$ to replace.

I will go for laptop in case of important personal files and documents that I don't want to share with anyone. But for development work, desktop is the best choice.

I would like to offer my opinion on the subject. I am a CTO for a small enterprise 5000+ employees, two sites, and an annual IT budget of 1 - 5 million per year.

If we are talking about a start up I agree with what someone said earlier, "the savings for power consumption between a laptop and workstation would be almost negligible".

For the enterprise I have approached this problem in a unique way. Recently our local power company has issued a power savings rebate to companies that can prove they are making an effort to be more energy efficient. By implementing power management software on our workstations which our vendor supplied for free we were able to qualify for a yearly power rebate which the vendor and my enterprise split.

This has significantly lowered are monthly energy costs. It might be worth it to check this out for those of you working within similar sized organizations.
