    How!?

So I've recently been getting this page when my internet cuts out at home.

    www20.search.rogers.com

Its a Rogers & Yahoo Search powered site, with a bunch of affiliate marketing links.

How does that work? When Rogers detects an internet disruption on its network, is it programmed to display the Yahoo provided search engine with affiliate links?

Its called DNS redirection. Its a dirty dirty dirty dirty dirty practice IMHO that ISPs are starting to engage in. When a DNS look-up fails they tell your browser that you can find the site at some other IP they control, which they get a kick back from. IE did it for a while (mabey they still do?) with MSN.

A lot of ISPs are doing it unfortunately. Call up your provider and tell them to bug the fuck out of your traffic. Then complain to the FCC, as they are a common carrier they shouldn't be inspecting your traffic.

Sorry I've got this thing about people I pay for internet access giving me a shitty connection and sniffing my traffic. Long live tor and PGP.

Edit: there are also a variety of addons and malware that can cause this type of redirection as well.
