    Data Field Identification

    Hello all,

As many of you may or may not know I have been making some hints that my newest project is going to be one of the next big things on the internet. This can only be true if I continue in my process of creating the site with the best available information. So I have decided to ask for your help in identifying the datafields that I will need to create a user profile.

I should probably start with a description of what my site is going to be. So here it goes.

I am creating a site that will be a wealth of knowledge, and directory for companies looking for logo design work. The site is going to allow companies to read through articles posted on the importance and components of a logo. Allow them to search a database of design companies around the world. The site will provide advertisements to design solutions. The biggest component of the site is to provide both designers, and companies looking for design work an area to create, and compete in logo design competitions.

As many people will point out, this has already been done. Sitepoint is a huge community with a stronghold on the market in this area. I am not looking for your approval to compete with sitepoint, or am I looking for reasons why I can't compete with them. What I am out to do is create another opportunity for designers and companies to get and provide a service that they need.

Although my site will have similiarities with other large communities I am out to make it great and unique, that is why I need your help. I have started creating the site right now and have come to the area in which once a user is registered, they will need to create a profile.

My users for the site will be as follows:

A Company -- Looking for a logo design, will be able to create competitions, and research design companies.

A Designer -- Can create a profile to advertise himself, Can compete in design competitions in order to make money.

A Design Company -- Can have the user Designer working for them and can have several designers on the site creating an opportunity for several designers to create a very powerful company presence on the site.

Some of the characteristics of the users will be their status on the site. When a company creates a contest they will have the ability to select a status level at which they would like their competition to be placed. Designers will therefore have a ranking of their skills based upon reviews of the logo creation and professionalism from companies that have purchased logos from them. If you therefore have a higher ranking you will be allowed to participate in competetions that have a higher value attached to them. This will allow for better designers to make more money, and have companies that are going to pay higher amounts of money to have better designers compete for their logo.

So what i need now is to figure out all of the data fields that will be attributed to the 3 types of users.

If you can help me make a list I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Adam

For those of you who want to see the development of the site goto Logopallet, Logo Design Contests you can register and login, but it really won't take you anywhere because most of the links are still dead.

Nobody has any suggestions for me?

    How about I start.

    User Name
    Password
    Email address
    Rank
    Company Name
    Address
    Phone Number
    URL

I would appreciate any ideas on things to include in a profile. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Well, you would want a couple or more tables...

    userid // Integer
    username // variable characters
    password // variable characters
    useremail // variable characters
companyid // Integer - joins the user with a possible company
useraddress // medium text // just in case
    userphone // Integer
    userurl // variable characters
designer // boolean - true; this user is a designer - false; this user is looking for a designer

    Then for the company
    companyid
    companyname
    companyemail
    companyphone
    companyaddress
    companyurl

same pretty much goes for them.

After that you want to be able to handle logo competitions, so you'll want a table for that once again starting with logoid, then you will want the ability for comments so you want a comments table (commentid joined to logoid (which btw is joined to companyid)) then you obviously want the design table, this handles the actual logo design images, joined to logoid. Then you may want extra features after that...

Thanks for the great post, do you have any good ideas i should add for features to the portfolio? One that I was think was offering a mini portfolio that will hold up to 10 images for the designer that people can scroll through.

Sounds like a good idea, add a bit of javascript to spice it up a little to . Something like 10 images with 50% opacity in a table to the left/right then you have the main scroller on which you can scroll horizontally through the images and click on the mini-images on the table to make them larger and add more details, then if you click on the larger image it will go full size . That's my idea xD.
