Best type of free anti virus?

I got a new computer, and I want to put some anti-virus protection on it. It initially came with McAfee, but the trial period is over.

Now II been doing some research, and there's a few 'free' versions of anti-virus programs like AVG, PC Tools and Cyberdefender as well as many others.

It seems that these 'FREE' anti-virus programs all have limits, or pop-ups or other annoying things that try to get you to 'buy' the paid version.

OK, I might consider paying for it, but if the 'free' version will take care of my anti-virus, malware and trojan protection, then, hey, I could deal with the nuisance of pop-ups.

I've read on some forums, that there are some viruses or trojans that promote certain bogus anti-virus software, so I think I would be best off using something from a company that is a public company if possible since a public company would probably have a more legitimate product and they would some accountability.

As far as I can tell Cyberdefener is the only public one of the 'FREE' anti-virus programs, and I think has more features then some of the others i've seen.

Can anyone give me feedback on Cyberdefender?

Am I wrong to only want to go with a public company?

Can anyone recommend some other anti-virus softwares that are as good as Cyberdefender (and free) that I should look into?

Thanks for your help - I appreciate it!

The best free virus protection? Linux.

Failing that, Avast's free version is decent enough.

Thumbs up Found this free antivirus software Works Great!

With the overwhelming companies forcing thier products on you each day i.e. antispyware, registry cleaners and so forth. One might be a little leary on which one to try, I came across Superantispyware.com last month and been using it ever since. They have a free version I have been using and this software removes the threat whereas others want you to buy thier product to remove.

AVG is good enough for me too. But if you want to keep your computer safe from spyware get Advanced Windows Care. It fixes a ton of problems.

AVG works without the common annoyances of free anti virus protection.

AVG is probably the best free one. But even with AVG, spybot, and lavasoft, using them together which are the best for free ones, they still arent good enough if you are running a business on your computer. They wont catch everything, so you could have a virus or worm and not even know about it. Plus, if you do get a virus they wont remove it properly or not at all.

Mcafee and Norton are the best and you shouldn't run a business from your computer without one of these. Yes you have to pay for them, but why risk losing everything? Especially if you are running a business from your pc.

There are ways around things to get them for free or a huge discount.

For instance, if you have comcast you can get a complete Mcafee virus scan package for FREE. This package retails for over 120 dollars and you get it for free. Cant go wrong there.
Norton on the other hand always offers deals to affiliates. Go to a website that is promoting Norton as an affliate and you will get a great deal one a year's subscription.

DONT OPERATE A BUINESS ON YOUR PC WITHOUT A PROPER VIRUS SCAN/PROTECTOR, IT'S NOT SMART.

Yes AVG FREE, Spybot and Ad-Aware, are the best you are going to get for free programs.
