If you want a laptop here is what you need to know. Laptops break easily depending on how you use it, batteries can go dead and so on. When buying a laptop do reasearch on how many different parts are available to fix it. Some good laptops ive heard of are Toshiba Thinkpads and Dell.

Now when looking to buy use the following two sites "make sure you know how to use ebay or you can get taken for"

#1 Site: ubid.com "Only verified businesses"
#2 Site: Buy.com "operated as amazon so anyone who has a business can sell and are verified Buy.com is ussually the cheapest seller on ebay.com sellers are upset about this as well.
#3 Site: Amazon.com look at the sellers on each product page, you can get lucky!
#4 Site: eBay.com be careful not to be taken for!

If your into brands I'd go with Mac but at the same time they are a very high preformance lap top. They can be really expensive but worth every penny. I've had mine for 2 years and spend 4,000 just in upgrades and customizing it and I would have to say its the best thing i've ever bought other than a car. You might thing 4k is a lot to spend on a lap top but they also have lap tops that are 800 and if you don't like apple i would deffinately try dell.

and to everyone else vouching for mac...

you never get viruses because who's going to waste the time to make a virus that's only has the potential to affect like 2% of the entire world.

I just wanted to point that out.

Anyways, Macs are good if you are serious into any kind of creative area (i.e. Music Production, Graphic Design, 3D Animation, etc.). Almost every serious creative type has a Mac (well, except me, I guess).

I choose to work on a Windows laptop because I can do my music productions, video editing, graphic/web design, etc. with my Adobe Master Collection or Microsoft Expression 2 Suite along with FL Studio. Also, the open source applications available for Windows greatly outnumber those for any other OS. When it comes to programming applications for Windows or Windows Mobile, I wouldn't be able to run Visual Studio 2008 without a Windows machine (Well, I could with a virtual pc application for mac, but that whole set up isn't worth it).

Think about it like this. If you are a serious creative type and that will be your primary use for a computer, go ahead and get a mac, it will last and perform to your needs. But if you specialize in multiple areas, you will probably be better off with a Windows machine.

    What exactly are your needs?

Also, I suggest not buying a 2nd hand laptop even if it's cheaper. It's just not worth it...
