Content Managed Site

I'm a little green...... I've managed some web sites and published your basic informational type web sites using 1&1 as a host with thier offered features (.qikexpress.com and .pack44cubscouts.com) because of that, I seem to have been volanteered by a friend to manage thier sports team web site. Currently the site is pylax.com and has the ability for users to login on and edit the home pages announcements. I have not been given the task yet but trying to prepare myself if officially asked.

After reading I see it looks like CMS?? What servers have to exsist on the host and what software is required. I have dreamweaver and frontpage for editing. I'm reading about IIS and Server 2003 and it's all confusing..... looking for some input mainly being I'm a novice.

whois shows .pylax.com is hosted on powweb.com anyone know anything much about it??

Don't be overwhelmed, its an easy process. Considering you are new, I would recommend looking for web hosts that offer CPANEL. CPanel has a built in module called Fantastico which installs several different CMS scripts for you, instantly. You don't need to know anything technical.

Also, throw out FrontPage. DreamWeaver would be the ideal tool for you starting in web design or being a 10 year veteran. (And if you can, get Photoshop.)

Powweb.com seems to have the right tools you need. Call them really quick, I'm sure they'll answer any questions you may have. Make sure you ask for CMS scripts that are installed automatically!

I love to help out newbie developers, shoot me a PM if you have any more questions!

"After reading I see it looks like CMS??"

Yes it seems at least that it runs from a database which would imply it is managed by a CMS. Specifically you can see this in pages with a query in the url "schedule.php?leagueid=3" for example.

"What servers have to exsist on the host and what software is required"
It is most likely this is hosting on a Linux server with php and mysql installed. Ask the host or upload a page with php info on it and you will get some information. IIS and server 2003 are microsoft systems and they are a nightmare to integrate php with.

As for editing the pages it should be quite simple. The CMS will have a administration where you login and edit the pages. Most CMS have a template management system which allow you to eddit pages (you can flip the html between dreamweaver and the template management system quite easily in most casses) which you can edit to change the layouts and then an editing suit with a text editor where you can edit content.
Failing that you can install php my admin and that will let you edit the database directly(it may be installed particularly if they run on a cpanel server). This is more technical of course.

Joomla or Drupal would be the best solution for your venture. Godaddy makes it really simple to set something up.
