Blackberry Newbie
hi, im planning to get blackberry bold / storm. However, I am very new to this phone and never used them but I am interested in the push email system, so I dont have to carry my laptop during my business trip...
Anyway, few questions though...
Do I need to pay Blackberry any monthly fee to setup push email ?
Can I retrieve my push mail without internet connection ? I used to travel to Indonesia and they do not have a very good internet coverage.
Let say I travel to India and purchase a cheap temporary India SIM card and plug into my blackberry phone. Can I still access my email ?
I heard about unlock blackberry and not to get scammed by PIN number. I don't really understand this stuff.. maybe some blackberry users can explain further so I can take precaution when buying..
Thanks.

I just purchased a Blackberry Tour, and if you are going with Verizon, get a Tour. The current 9530 Storm is very slow and the surepress feature is not that great on it. If you are going to get a phone soon, get a Tour. If you have time to wait, and prefer the touch screen, get the 9550 Storm 2 (AKA Odin). Its much more powerful, the surepress screen is much more sensitive, and it features wifi, which the current storm does not.
The Bold however, has both WiFi and ATTs 3G network.
I just got my Tour and the e-mail is great. Just pay for your monthly data plan, which is 30 dollars, unlimited Blackberry Data, with Verizon and ATT alike, and your set. You can set up any e-mail address, from common @yahoo.com e-mails, to business e-mails, like mine andrew@infinitelogos.com. As long as the e-mail is NOT set up through the Blackberry Server. If it is, you will need to purchase the monthly $45 Blackberry Server Internet and Email plan.
Its a great tool to have, and the Tour and Bold have a similar keyboard, the Tour's is slightly smaller, but much easier to type on, for me at least.
I hope that helped.

Well, within the country, with Verizon there are no roaming charges. However, once you exit the US, roaming charges do apply. I do know that there is an international plan, which you can purchase for just the duration you are away. In other words if you are gone for a week, you only pay that plan for a week, not an entire month. The Storm and Tour are both world capable phones, they are both GSM and CDMA, enabling them to work with the internal antenna and a SIM Card. Getting a 3G network out of the country might be expensive if you do not have an international plan.
I don't know much about international rates, because I didn't use a blackberry when I left the country, but this is what I've heard from Verizon Reps and friends.

If you saw Watchdog last night you will know about the dangers of accessing your emails on wireless networks, particularly if there is senstive or financial information contained in them. Have you considered investing in a smaller, lighter laptop computer and a vpn (virtual private network)? This would be far more secure and user friendly.

well blackberrys are pretty secure. thats why the president uses one. when you start up your phone it goes threw a security check. and i'm sure you probably purchased your phone by now but you could get away with a blackberry with wifi...and that way you just connect to a wireless and dont have to worry about extra data charges. the storm2 has that. and the storm is better now...its no longer slow.

Verizon, Sprint and Alltel are CDMA networks, the rest of the world is GSM. You can get chips to use when outside the US, but using another North American carrier will be simpler.
You can also pick up some refurbished BlackBerries here - Wholesale Dropshippers (Powered by CubeCart)

I would highly require a CDMA network. CDMA networks are much faster than their GSM counterparts. In addition, yes, the blackberry does undergo a security check upon start up. I would actually recommend waiting for the Tour 2 which will include Wi-Fi support that the current Tour 9630 does not, and will have an optical trackpad, which is a great step in the right direction. If you have any questions about blackberries, feel free to PM me anytime

Since Vodaphone bought Verizon, Verizon will be going to GSM.
CDMA is Betamax to the rest of the world's VHS. Better, faster, who cares? It's not what is happening with 90% or so of the world's cell phones.

That's definitely true, they are moving to GSM with that acquisition, however, I'd assume it would take a relatively long period of time before they make the switch. What does it matter what is happening with 90% of the world's cell phones?? GSM probably takes a large lead, but its not just CDMA, there are so many different bands.
