You don't necessarily need any experience in viticulture (grape growing) in order to start a winery. Obviously, if you plan to grow your own grapes, you do though. Rather, you should at least have some knowledge in the field of enology, or oenology, (winemaking), even if you plan to merely hire a winemaker and just run the business side of things yourself.

We have done a lot of research into the wine industry and have even prepared a business plan for a winery. Why don't you start out by doing the same, and then come back here with specific questions that others can help you answer.

Well, for starters, why do you want to get into the winemaking business? What do you know about it? What are your goals and expectations?

Do you have any funds that you would be able to invest into the business? Or will you be requiring 100% financing and/or investments?

The wine industry truly does have potential, in almost any nation with a natural supply of grapes and other ingredients. Many magazines and economic journals have made statements to this effect, stating that the Wine and Spirits industry will see a big boom in 2008.

Make sure that you have all bases covered. Have a well-rounded business plan written. And for common courtesy- don't go around begging for other people's plans- they take a lot of work and cost too much to simply give away!

If you are looking for funding, you can try your state bank. If you wish, I can talk to investors overseas on your behalf, but I will need something to work with (a business plan, investment guidelines, liquidity reports, etc).

I'm going to start a wine business myself. Right now I'm learning the process and have begun making wine as of now. WineBusiness.com is a very good source for myself, and maybe you too. Instead of having a vineyard and growing it myself, I am going to look for someone who produces the grapes and purchase from them instead.
